Next Wednesday, 7 October, we will host an exciting workshop on authority and normative powers, at the @ccj-udg.bsky.social - University of Girona. We have a fantastic fantastic line-up of speakers who will discuss a set of closely related topics and questions 👇

I signed the contract today, so it must be true: starting October I'll be a Postdoc in PPE at Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. Super pleased I'll get to develop my work on social norms in the brand new PPE research group!

Publishing open access, extended research visits, work set up (I got myself a standing desk and better mouse). Laptop if that's not provided to you anyway.

Some films feel like they should have gotten a couple more redrafts before being made, and it's a shame Gentle Monster is one of those. Description made me think it could be very interesting - after seeing it I still think it *could* have been interesting.

I hoped this would repeat when I was travelling through several beautiful places this summer. In fact I heard about my new job right after I had returned - but I did the interview while facing the green Slowakian mountains.

The algorithm gave me a clip where after every line spoken, there was a *ding* sound and the name of the character's current emotion put on the screen. I feel so *ding* _sad_ at the stupidification pushed onto humanity by the way content works now.

Or the whole video is under a minute so you see it again after seconds! We should feel collectively insulted at all these new outrageous attention-grabbing techniques

I'm a Meta-Effective Altruist™️ I believe that Effective Altruism needs to be redistributed from where it is least effective (Silicon Valley sex cultists) to where it would be most effective (British pensioners who leave their life savings to the Donkey Sanctuary).

Two things I learned in the past two weeks: 1) You can get a 2nd degree burn just from grabbing a plate of leftovers out of the microwave 2) Fingerprints are kind of useful to have and you will miss it if you lose one

Now that I think about it, this was one of my favourite classes - I assigned each student one section beforehand, so they could have 'expertise' and explain the details to those who had focused on the other claims. Worked perfectly, for a group partially new to ethics.

I've found David O. Brink, ‘A Puzzle About the Rational Authority of Morality’ good for teaching. No false conclusion, but rather a set of plausible but jointly inconsistent claims where we have to choose which one to reject.

I'm rereading the Odyssey in preparation for watching the film. I knew there was a lot of feasting, but forgot how much of it involves sobbing and sleeping arrangements. Somehow I'm not expecting to see those elements represented in the cinema

I gave a public lecture in German for the first time last week, and the most German thing about it - aside from being introduced as Frau Dr. Gerritsen - was that the water they gave me to drink while speaking was sparkling.

Since the film is mostly shots of toilets, it's good that they are at least nice ones! (And that none of them actually look dirty)

Quite frustrating that Mubi Go is giving me a ticket to see The Odyssey *next* week, when his is my last week before travel. The good news is that I'm pretty confident I could see the film unsynchronised in a Slowakian cinema

I saw Tuner and was enjoying the warm interactions in the piano tuner family so much that I didn't want the crime part to start - but in the end the criminals *also* cared about our guy in a weirdly touching way. Might watch again just for the pleasant vibe.

I went from never cooking cabbage to having to think of a use for one every week this winter and my favourite discovery was cabbage curry: rainbowplantlife.com/cabbage-curry/ I even found myself desiring cabbage pasta again this week. Just fried cabbage and cheese sauce, quite comforting

In German class we had to practice academic phrases by formulating a definition for a few things, like 'poodle' and 'artificial intelligence'. The teacher didn't grasp why this exercise seemed impossibly difficult to me for reasons that had nothing to do with my German skills.

On my way to the Swedish Congress of Philosophy to give a talk on righteous incivility. Very pleased that there is now a direct train to Stockholm and so the Swedish announcements started right as we left Hamburg Central Station!

Richard Joyce's Myth of Morality played a big part in shaping my initial PhD topic, so it was a nice full-circle moment to get invited to write a review of the sequel. My review of Morality: From Error to Fiction is forthcoming in Philosophical Review, preprint here: philpapers.org/rec/GERROR-3

I got the advice to have a healthy weight, which at that time in my life clearly meant gaining rather than losing, and I still wonder if that was said just because they tried to apply the standard advice of weight loss.

Hamburg is having a referendum on whether we want to try to bring the Olympics here. I really don't have an opinion on this question, but still I get so frustrated that I don't get a vote just because I'm not a German national. How can that actually be argued to be relevant?

My recent worst experience was with one of those journals, so there definitely seems to be a big difference in availability or efficiency of reviewers! Maybe I should write some more on error theory...

A while ago I heard the waiters at the Italian restaurant around the corner exclaim 'Pizza pasta ristorante!' in a stereotypical accent and decided they're faking being Italian, but today they spoke fluently (non-food words!) with an Italian customer, so now I don't know what to think anymore.

I sometimes get random pre-feature shorts in the cinema and last night's one was GREAT but I can't even tell people to go see it because it's not playing or streaming anywhere. On the other hand, I thoroughly recommend NOT watching Rosebush Pruning.

I watched Past Lives for the second time and realised that part of why I love it is that it has one of the best on-screen relationships I've seen - and it's not even the relationship the story is about.

This photo I took at a graveyard has the same vibe: while we stand in awe of humanity and reflect on our destiny as mortals, we also still need to know where the toilet is.
A large rock with the letters WC and an arrow painted on it. Behind it stands a large stone monument with an image of a winged hourglass, around which a snake bites its own tail.

It made me laugh that the big career achievement everyone is aiming for is going from part time to full time professor - like they'd heard about the precarity and competititon and stuff but didn't *quite* get how academic careers work. I loved the film though!

LinkedIn presented me with a post of an "academic ghost-writer" who complains that the students she writes papers for no longer like her human writing style, they want it to seem more AI-written. Won't someone think of the real victims of AI!

We may think that the point of giving gifts is showing thoughtfulness. This point is lost when we buy from wish lists - yet this is often the social expectation. So do good manners require following the practice, or acting on the underlying value? Blogpost: elinegerritsen.com/2026/02/23/t...

Same in Germany (or Hamburg at least) - was very glad that when I was stupidly out of allergy medication on a Sunday, I could still cycle to a pharmacy that was open.
