In my experimentation this week, I found that I was right about one thing and wrong about another. I was right that there is an ideal average token size for our workload. I was wrong that it was a single byte. elijahpotter.dev/articles/byt...

Bytes Are Not Big Enough
I am trying to create a strong and small base model. A model that can semantically understand small passages of text, which we can then retrain to do a variety of different things.

As a non-native english speaker, I’m very self-conscious about grammar. I installed Harper on Obsidian and I just want it everywhere. A couple of clicks and I found out you can have it everywhere. Thanks @elijahpotter.dev this is amazing work. writewithharper.com/desktop

For those out there (like myself) who are chronic over-parenthesizers: Try using em-dashes instead. They're classy, easy to type (with Harper, just write three hyphens: ---), and LLMs don't use them as much anymore, so you're free from some — but not all — of the allegations.

Despite our permissive LLM policy, your PR is probably 10 times more likely to be merged if it is not written by a clanker.

I'm certain that *something* happened, but I'm also wary to accept unfalsifiable evidence from two companies who have been known to exaggerate their claims in the past.

Elijah Potter @elijahpotter.dev · 30/07/2026
As the author of one of those Hacker News comments, I'd like to speak on behalf of the others: The Hugging Face evidence is simply not enough. Both companies have a vested interest in these models seeming intelligent. They don't need to conspire in order to both be unreliable sources.

I'm not sure what you mean by Mythos debate. If you refer to the whole Mythos debacle where they made it seem dangerous, yes. To this day, I think that the restrictions on Fable are largely marketing.

Until I see any evidence from an organization *other* than OpenAI, I am choosing to believe this is nothing more than science fiction from their marketing team. They have not demonstrated honesty in stories like these.
