Due to some update pipeline issues with my old setup, I decided to go for a new design for my personal website: www.eliesgilfuster.eu. Feedback welcome!

Poah, I don't know. There are a few arxiv submissions where the authors are clearly in no position to claim responsibility. It may be overcorrecting, but our reasonable social norms are at stake!

Nothing new, but: the @deutschebahn.com again destroyed my productivity for the whole day. Every time this happens, I'm more likely to take a plane next time. I wonder what's the solution, and I wonder whether this should be a talking point in the upcoming election.

Megafires, floods, extreme weather and rising heat deaths were predicted by climate models more than 30 years ago. Now the window for action is rapidly closing, and science warns of a far greater crisis ahead. What are we going to do? repositori.upf.edu/server/api/c...

In case you prefer scirate over arxiv: scirate.com/arxiv/2607.2... PS: we might make a poll for the quantum community around the perceived value of scirate, stay tuned!

I'm also super happy about the title we converged to. We worry there is some unjustified hype in #QML, which then serves as basis for unjustified pessimism. We want to be very clear: we do not solve the field, we just give indirect evidence that #QML could share some nice qualities with classical ML

Overall, I'm super grateful for having been part of this collaboration, as it fits perfectly my personal narrative arch: I do love studying #generalization in #QML, and in particular modernizing our techniques!

The math is pretty cool: it follows a very specific error decomposition for the test error which highlights a few key spectral quantities. We then carefully show how each of them remains under control, exploiting neat results from random matrix theory. We confirm the theory via numerical experiments

Our previous work, with most of the same authors, showed that #QuantumKernel methods do show double descent. The remaining open question was whether messy, non-linear, gradient-trained (re-uploading) models would also show it. In this work, we confirm they do.

Elies Gil-Fuster @eliesgf.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
The phenomenon of #DoubleDescent sits at the center of the discussion for classical #ML models like deep neural networks. It was a priori unclear whether usual #QML models would display the same behavior, and hence whether we should expect good performance at scale.

Elies Gil-Fuster @eliesgf.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
For the big picture: the holy grail of #ML is knowing how well will a model perform on data it has never seen before. There was a traditional approach to study this formally, within the PAC learning framework, but in recent years we have noticed that we need better techniques.

Last week we posted a super-exciting work, on #DoubleDescent in #QuantumMachineLearning, specifically for usual gradient-trained #ParametrizedQuantumCircuits: arxiv.org/abs/2607.21409 The Germany-Netherlands Academia-Industry collaboration was spear-headed by Marie Kempkes, who is just great!

Is QEC eating quantum?
Quantum error correction (QEC) is a hot research topic among quantum computing researchers. This is a short analysis of just how popular QEC is.

davidbessis.substack.com/p/the-fall-o... An interesting read, with lots of food for thought. It reminds me of my enthusiasm for "mathematical clean-up work", i.e. going back to the foundations of a topic, making the constants sharper, proofs nicer (and more modern), and the like.

Together, you can view our paper as a recipe book which, depending on your quantum-hardware capabilities, will spell out the best implementation for inference in quantum kernel methods. I'm particularly intrigued whether similar techniques can be used to speed-up training as well.

The main message is that the usual approach can be refined in two independent ways, which together yield a quadratic improvement. We show that this improvement is optimal, and along the way we give insight into a zoo of intermediate algorithmic choices.

Today we posted a new pre-print on #QuantumKernels: scirate.com/arxiv/2604.15214 This time, instead of searching for kernels that achieve quadvantage and whatnot, we concentrate on how to perform inference: how to best evaluate a learned hypothesis on new data. #QML & #QuantumAlgorithms!

This is very close to my heart. One thing I found genuinely exciting was following the developments in "understanding generalization in deep learning" before transformers stole all the thunders. This perhaps explains why I've had the personal goal of modernizing the study of generalization in #QML.

To be honest I always thought this is what would happen. Any part of a system that can be fully off-loaded to an automated algorithm could in-principle be removed entirely from the system. No?
