'It’s deeply, deeply disordered (to pick a word) that so much of our #disability discourse is about the least afflicted, the least in need, the least fucked up. I think in fact that this dynamic is often disgusting. In so many cases - your Ivy League “neurodiversity activists,” your bored white […]

'It’s *vulgar* for people who are basically fine to playact as deeply sick. It’s vulgar to put the demand for attention ahead of medical need. It’s vulgar to turn suffering into style. It’s vulgar to reduce debilitating disorders to yet more fodder for personal branding. It’s vulgar for […]

The makers of today's #NYTSpellingBee were definitely trying to stump everyone #GenZ and younger with the #pangram. 😂 #payphones #old

Scoring in the NYT Spelling Bee with the word "payphone."

The U.S. media is incapable of talking about #China in a normal way, and it consistently makes us look fucking ridiculous. There is no secret Chinese "so-called open source." It's just #opensource, bitch! […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

From the linked story: "On Friday, Mr. Xi specifically mentioned the so-called open source method that the Chinese companies use to develop their technology."

@erraggy @Migueldeicaza It assumes that no one would do anything good if left to their own devices, and that the impulse human beings have to work and create can only be brought out with a gun to your head. Extremely cynical and pessimistic world view.

@Floppy I understand the intention, but I also don't like the idea of having multiple competing culture warrior versions of every single piece of software. And what happens when people on the forked team start to disagree, and someone makes a third one?

@Migueldeicaza I can't believe this isn't the stock answer when people talk about replacing jobs with AI/LLMs. This should be the first thing every reporter asks Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, or Elon Musk when they talk to them about our glorious "AI future." "So, uh, why do we still need *YOU* […]

Vicious cycle-style meme with French philosopher Albert Camus pictured in the center. Clockwise from the top, the arrows read:

I meet someone --> we talk --> I say we must imagine Sisyphus happy --> they leave --> [back to the top] I meet someone

I liked this parenthetical aside by @pluralistic as much as the main piece. pluralistic.net/2026/04/22/uber-for… "Voting with your wallet" is an absurd notion not just for the reason Doctorow gives here: it also makes individualist consumption […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

(If I could abolish two pieces of received wisdom about tech policy, the other one would be "If you're not paying for the product, you're the product." Decent treatment is not a customer reward program, and "voting with your wallet" only works if you're a billionaire whose wallet is thicker than all the other wallets put together.)
