It’s 60°+ in the Midwest, which is practically tropical in late December for us. I love snow and cold, so I don’t suffer from wintertime depression stuff, but lately instead I have this like… existential dread over warm winters and climate change?? And I think maybe that’s almost worse

I have a designated friend who I process with, who I can go to and be like “Hey, I’m in my white person feels about an interaction, can we work through it?” And I do the same for them when needed. It’s a lot of work to be an effective ally. But it’s important and I hope you’ll still speak up.

And when you do feel some kind of way about a person reacting to your words or actions, being able to process that on your own without making the conversation about your own feelings. If you have another cishet friend who does allyship work, processing with them can be really helpful.

Anyway, there’s no definitive guide to what to say or not say in every situation, but there is a lot of good info out there about how to be a good ally in general. The biggest thing is being willing to listen more than you speak & recognizing that you’re a guest at the table, even on your own posts.

A lot of us are dealing with a ton of trauma from, as you said earlier, constantly being attacked. We even turn it on one another sometimes. It sucks and I wish it was different, but hurt people hurt people. And frankly a lot of “allies” are surface level performers, so we learn to be hesitant.

I’m sorry to have to tell you that a large part of allyship is discomfort. I’ve done a lot of anti-racist work and have had to learn this myself in those spaces. A lot of my early days were me saying the wrong thing, getting called out, and feeling some kinda way about it for awhile.

I’m bi, so your hunch was right. I’m not NB or trans, so that’s why I choose not to comment on the quality of rep for those subsets in Veilguard, but I’ll always go to bat for them when people lay the blame of a game’s failure on inclusion of their identities, whether that’s true or not.

Another little bit of food for thought: something I try to instill in my kids is the idea of “impact over intent.” Whether you meant for your comment to be reductive to marginalized people doesn’t matter nearly as much as how it made someone else feel, when all is said and done.
