Inquisitor Appreciation Week - Day 2 Piety

"Do you even believe in the Maker?"

Cassandra's words still echoed through Elariel's mind. A distant whisper from the shadows in the vulnerability of sleepless nights.
Those words, they rung loudly in her memory.
Together with the roar of Corypheus' army thrown back and forth from the surrounding mountains. Building into a wave of fury and fear that nearly swallowed Haven.
The shouting. Orders. Screaming. The despair of the Inquisiton's people, her people.
Fighting. Struggling. Dying.
The avalanche that then choked all sound. In snow and heavy silence.
The singing. Loose threads of hope tethered to her person and the ludicrous idea of her being the Herald of Andraste.

Once more, Elariel woke with a choked gasp. The large bedchamber on the top floor of the tower in Skyhold lay dark and silent. Not even the wind whistled around the closed windows.
She was alone.
The fire had burned down, embers fading in the white ash. Mimicking the stars and moon that speckled the depth of the night sky. Morning had not yet woken.

"Do you even believe in the Maker?"

No.

That had at least been her immediate reply.

She didn't know if the Maker existed. Didn't even know if the Creators were still there or had abandoned the Dalish to the whims of humanity and history.

Yet even then, even doubting her own people's teachings, her belief, her faith was not in the Maker nor his mortal, sacrificial bride.

But with more time, more expectations, more hope and doubts thrown at her from every corner of Thedas she dared show her face in, that conviction and her reply had gotten weaker and less clear.

Elariel didn't believe in the Maker.

Most of her life she'd feared and hated the Chantry and his most devout and loudest and most cruel followers for what they had done to her people. How much death they'd spread in the name of their God like wildfire with no regard to compassion or sanity.

Yet, with the Inquisiton and people like Cassandra and Leliana she'd found a different voice, a different piety and reverence.
One that believed in good. And justice. And maybe even peace and acceptance.
Listening to Cassandra believe so strongly while allowing herself to doubt the intentions of the Chantry had incited a small fire within herself.
One that - against all odds - wanted to believe that Cassandra's vision could become reality.

Her heart told her that she was neither chosen by gods nor prophets.
Maybe by luck or fate or doom.
Her actions and everything it entailed were her own. As were her choices.

But seeing the hopeful glances in the courtyard, the way more and more people joined forces against this new evil.
Elves. Dwarves. Humans. Mages. Some Clerics. Even few Tal Vashoth and Templar deserters.
What else was it to do than to finally make Elariel believe.

No, not in the Maker. But not in her Gods either.
But in people. In her friends. And in herself.

And this was a tender and dangerous new belief indeed.
