*Extremely* weird #LastFourWatched here, pretty much entirely due to my podcasting schedule (only one of these films wasn't watched for a podcast) but I'm having a good time so what do I have to complain about? #LetterboxdFriday

-The Handmaiden (rated 5 stars)

Some former Bioshock 2 devs got together to make a short, sweet game about navigating queerness and familial difficulties in the 90s and a massive number of people were FURIOUS about it. They could not believe that they had the gall to make a game that they personally wouldn't like.

The idea that there was ever a moment where progressive politics was considered "Inoffensive" to people who use Woke as a pejorative is hysterical to me. One lady made a youtube series about applying extremely mild feminist critiques to video games and a bunch of dudes declared a holy war about it.

Rest in Peace Marjoe Gortner, a dude who led a fascinating life. MST3K fans might recognize him from Starcrash, but if you get a chance go see Marjoe, a documentary about the evangelical machine in the 70s. I discovered it through my Oscars podcast and it's now one of my favorite documentaries.

I've been thinking a lot about it, and how it portrays that system. Honestly think the shot of Dan in front of the Missing Kids posters is one of my favorite shots of the year.

People like to talk up how complicated and twisty the ending of American Psycho is, but the message is very simple and clear: real estate agents will gladly help you cover up a murder.

You know it occurs to me that the film is not particularly well represented by that poster, but that's how they tried to sell it. Anyway, come listen, Ricardo Montalban is in it! open.spotify.com/episode/6PNX...

It's time for another episode of The Biggest Night in Podcasting, where we talk about the Oscar's favorite subject: World War 2! I'm joined by Justin and Todd to talk about World War 2 as written by someone who fought in it, 1949's Battleground. youtu.be/1sMbIxsUOwA?...

It's kinda fun how the government gutted the FDA despite everyone telling them it would fuck up our food supply and lead to constant recalls, and we've had constant recalls since then but they just keep on choogling like nothing is wrong. It's like a badly written satire, it's neat.

Heartthrob by Tegan and Sara. Massive shift into a more pop sound (especially jarring after Sainthood) but it slaps.

There were more men in a single documented gang rape at one school than the number of competitive trans athletes nationally. But I’ve heard a lot more politicians being asked about protecting girls from one of these scenarios and not another… I’ll let you guess which is which.

The connection between To Catch a Predator and the zeitgeist of post-9/11 hysteria is pretty obvious in hindsight, but I didn't expect the movie to be so pointed about it. The movie is doing pretty well, so I wonder if Gen Z is about to discover how insane the culture was in the mid-2000s

Still thinking about Primetime, which I think is a sign that it's a real winner. If I was listing my favorite shots of the year so far, I think the shot of Decoy Dan in front of all the missing kids posters would be in the top 3.

Primetime is an extremely astute movie, one that manages to carefully show off all the different ways child predation exists in the American imagination, ties it into other cultural forces and show how we all let it turn us into maniacs. Easily one of the year's best, highly recommended

The changes i'm debating are: -Bump Camp, Obsession and Backrooms up a little. Thought about them all more than I suspected i would -Drop Odyssey and Oak Street a little. I liked them, but my emotions about Odyssey are tied to This Horrible Moment and Oak Street just doesn't have a lot of substance.

Its basically the only long term strat that makes sense, given they're pivoting when the GOP is as unpopular as it's ever been, but it might be giving them too much credit?

Ellie, Author, Dreamweaver, Visionary Plus Actor @elessar42.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

I think a lot of right wing dems (Newsome and Fetterman in particular) are thinking that with the GOP about to get their shit rocked and Trump being on borrowed time, they can pivot and rule the Republican party once Trump is gone (given all presumptive heirs have been stomped down by Trump).

One of the most frustrating things about modern politics is the societal obligation to take obvious lies seriously, and this ons really grates. Can people please act like they're adults and know how the world fucking works?
