I've got a lot on this month, so I'm focusing on powering through Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros. I have read it before, but due to *circumstances* I never read Onyx Storm (which I received on day two of its release!). So, I'm doing a refresh read before diving in to book 3.

I'm a fiction editor with over 15 years' experience. I specialise in fantasy and science fiction, and *adore* spicy stories! I offer developmental editing, line editing, and proofreading! I love reading (probably too much...is that a thing?), am an editing addict, and addicted to coffee and boots.

I'm in the deeps of the editing ocean, dealing with dragons and bonded creatures, and I am loving every second of it.

Officially want to congratulate J.S. Harman on becoming a finalist for the Aurealis Awards! The Aurealis Awards are Australia's top Speculative Fiction Awards, and to become a finalist, you need to come in the top 6 for your category. This round there were just shy of 800 entrants overall.

Today my youngest goes to school for the first time. This week is filled with errands and appointments I couldn't do across the last 6.5 weeks of school holidays, but in between all that, I'll be working on a developmental edit of "It Was Always You" by MM Forster.

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 29/01/2026

I'm still on Quicksilver, but I'm at 73%. Things have slowed a bit because I've been doing other things... *looks at WoW* I'd love to get it finished today, but school goes back and the day is filled with errands and professional development work, so we'll see!

What are you working on today? Today I'll be doing the final digital input on an Australian novel, "Isolate". I'm really happy with how far this book has come! The writing has a polaroid, hot-summer vibe (which fits perfectly). It's wistful, and sad, and pulls at the heartstrings.

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 25/01/2026

I have finished so many books already this year! Paralysed by choice for what was next, I put it to a poll, and my Twitch companions chose number "2", which corresponded in the secret list to Quicksilver, by Callie Hart. I'm already at 45% and I only started it two days ago!

Huge thank you to Beth Ball for sending a copy of her book, Phoenix Rising, book 1 of the Feather & Flame series. Editing a book is a privilege, but receiving a copy of it, or being acknowledged in some way, is the peak of my job. So thank you, this means a lot.

There’s something down there… in the deep… Currently, I'm working on the proofs for Dark Tides, Book 2 of the Dark Worlds Saga by JS Harman. This book is fantastic, and I cannot wait to see it out in the world!

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 12/01/2026

I want to get more reading done this year, and I've also decided to extend my professional development, which includes rereading a lot of non-fic books, and also newer ones! I'm trying to balance it out, and so far I am having a blast. Do you have a goal this year? What are you enjoying right now?

Merry Christmas, from me to you! I'm getting in early, because it's Gideon's 5th birthday today, and I will be super busy from this afternoon onwards. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday period, filled with family, friends, and some wonderfully scrumptious food!

This week I'm working on Bite Me, by Coffee Quills, a prolific genre weaver. Addicted to coffee, and with a special (and very strong) interest in hedgehogs, you can catch up with them at @CoffeeQuills on most socials!

This week I'm working on Dark Tides, book 2 of the Dark Worlds Saga. Book 1, Dark Sands, is out now, and I highly recommend it if you like accessible sci fi with a story that will have you thinking, and wary, for a long time to come! I am *loving* this second instalment!

Today I'm doing something I don't normally do (by choice). I'm working on a book that's currently in development. It's in the drafting stage, and I am SO EXCITED to be working on this with Alex. I've read every book ever by Alex, and I love the stories SO much. It is a privilege!

My weekend started off with the Fabled Magazine launch in the city, then I got to my Mum's at 2.30am. 2.5 hours sleep and it was up and off to the market to sell Mum's creations! Directly after that was my beautiful sister's wedding up at a winery in Coldstream. It was exhausting! But wonderful.

Happy Halloween! How cool is this display! Went trick or treating with the boys. I take the candy with me to give out, because we live in a tucked-away street, and I love seeing all the kids' smiles!

Today, after a bunch of appointments and Monday admin, I'll be working on 'Bears & Bakeries: Pie Holes' by Dylan Drakes, a novella that accompanies 'Bears & Bakeries', a story of two chonky men who fall for each other and baste each other's pies. Among other things. ;)

I might be a professional editor, but I am not a professional cake decorator. Still, the now-11yo absolutely loved it. Here's the monstrosity!

This is the scent of my day! Picture of the candle the ever-beautiful @ekearlewrites gave me yesterday. It smells *amazing*. Don't even need to burn it, just open it! *swoon* Do you like candles? I do. I have a problem. I need a shelving unit just for scented candles, I think.

Weekend's over. Time to hit the books again! "El Fashela" now, and later I'll be working on the proofread of "Seriah, Daughter of Darkness". I'm excited to dive in. Emails are done already, so is the grocery shopping. My desk is clean, too. I love my editing hole. What's on the cards for you today?

Legion Remix drops in a few hours! *internal excited screaming* Oh. Have to work. 3 appointments too. You know, sometimes I do miss those early days of my 20s when I could play for days and had fewer responsibilities.

Working on Seriah: Daughter of Darkness, by JR Mitchell. It's clean, it's easy (well, easier), and it's like chocolate at the end of a long day. Do you need an editor? I'm booking December onwards. I do book out fast, so even if you're just curious about the next step for your novel, email me soon.

I was up for 22+ hours yesterday, but I ended my night with a heap of writing (reoutlining a story to turn it from a novella to a full novel, apparently). It got me thinking what programs people use to write their stories. I use 4theWords (RPG for writers), and Scrivener. What do you use?

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 04/10/2025

Cleaned my office and finally sorted (one of) my bookshelf(s)! Stuck up the fairy lights, too, but didn't have as many as I wanted (still looks pretty though!). Really pleased with it!

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 04/10/2025

I read through the prologue of one of my WIPs today and it made me cry a bit. That's a good thing, right? So sad and heartbreaking, I hope it hits readers just as hard.

040

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 02/10/2025

Going to work on my WIP today, and an edit, and I have to remove 4-y-o blutac from my fairylights. It's all gunky. But I am cheap and do not want to buy new ones. So goop here I come!

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 30/09/2025

Working on this one today, got a lot to get done, so I'll be streaming live for a few hours at twitch.tv/elementeds if you want to cowork/body double! Streaming Spirit City onscreen, a productivity game while I work behind the scenes on this one (permissions!).

Day off turned into a half day (we went to the skate park, then the boys got haircuts, and donuts, and now we're home!). Got some editing done with @ekearlewrites.bsky.social and next I'll be doing more edits with @coffeequillsauthor.itch.io ! Having a great day. Oh and my house is clean now, too!

010

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 30/09/2025

Have a day off today. It's school holidays, so the house is a mess, and I want to spend some time with the kids, too. I promised I'd take them to the skate park in town for the first time, so even though it's raining, we're going (it's undercover anyway!).

010

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 29/09/2025

Streamed twice today, got my 50 pages proofed, next up I get to do chores. Yippee. But there's a mess in the kitchen and the laundry needs doing! Productive day so far and feeling good for it.

000

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 29/09/2025

These are the books I am reading, whether that be hardcopy, ebook, or audiobook, I am loving each one. What are you reading at the moment? Any recommendations for me to add to my (extensive) TBR? I hope I can finish these all by January!

121

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 28/09/2025

Today I'm working on The Dark Retribution by C Smith! It's in its final round of editing (proofreading) and it's come so far. It's beautiful to see and I love working with this author in such a collaborative way!

010

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 28/09/2025

Went to a party yesterday and had a lot of fun. It's the first time since we had our smallest that we were able to just let him play, knowing he would not get into anything he shouldn't. It was so nice to hang out with friends and their families, to meet some new people, and just have a great time.

020

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 26/09/2025

Ok, I have organized all my WIPs and shorts into one Scrivener project (except the full-length novels, which have their own project files). Given that it's nearly 2am, I should probably go to bed, right? Right. *shuffles off*

110

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 26/09/2025

Not me procrastinating on working on my own stuff by sitting on socials. What I *should* be doing is the deep clean event run by @ekearlewrites.bsky.social and taking inventory of what projects I have going.

000

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 26/09/2025

Having difficulty finding a beta reader? Just not getting back the feedback you actually *need*? Tired of the (still wonderful, but somewhat unhelpful) "I loved it!"? Let my team help you get what you need to take your book to the next level.

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 24/09/2025

I went to a client book launch last night for the first time in over a decade. I really believe in J.S. Harman and his book, Dark Sands. It's a wonderful sci-fi novel that's entirely approachable for all readers, and I just love it! Thank you for a lovely night, and thank you for the shout out!

011

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 22/09/2025

Today I'll be finalising a proofread, then working on The Veil Between by @emilypaul_writes which is in the paper-run stage of proofing. I also have to go find and then buy gumboots for the middle kiddo, because he has a massive Scout camp this weekend. Did I mention it's also school holidays?

010

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 20/09/2025

I'm seeing so many posts from my authors showing their new works, and their older ones, and they make me so so happy. Well done, everyone, client or not!

010

Kat Betts | Element Editing Services @elementeds.bsky.social · 20/09/2025

Did you know that I sometimes stream edits (only with permission!) on Twitch.tv/elementeds ? Come and cowork/body double, enjoy a book, get some writing done, and network (and make friends!) with other people in chat!
