Dinner Prep #1 complete. ✅
Image of several glass containers and a ceramic bowl resting on top of a white stove with black eyes. Two containers sitting at the back left are filled with straw and chili-colored substances while a dish at the front left shows a medley of fresh vegetables, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and red onions. The eye at the front right is empty but a bowl with spaghetti and a rich mound of pasta sauce sits between it and the veggie bowl. A single, wide saucepan looks upon the scene, perched firmly atop the back right eye.

Really appreciating this convening and @beamorg.bsky.social's interest in participating in and contributing to it. A necessary and critical intervention. #healing #solidarity #newbeginnings
Flyer of an online event titled 'Solidarity as Medicine: Asian & Black Communities Healing Together' put together by the Asian Mental Health Collective and the Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective. The title of the program is in a light mustard yellow and sits against a dark, forest green background. Beneath the title in white text are the date and time of the event as well as images of the organization's two executive directors, Ayesha Meer and Yolo Akili Robinson.

Meer is a fair-skinned woman of South Asian descent with long, dark brown hair that cascades about her shoulders and a wide smile that seems to terminate at ears ringed with medium-sized gold hoops. Robinson is a medium-skinned man of African descent wearing a shirt with a geometrical pattern of light pink, grey, and white squares and wide wire eyeglasses.

It's not fried shrimp but I rather enjoyed my late breakfast today.
Image of a toasted bagel, sitting on a plate that rests on a pale green towel. Fried bits of asiago cheese and gently toasted olive green jalapeño peppers can be seen nestled in the top half while smoked salmon, cream cheese, and pickled red onion are sandwiched between the bottom half. Flecks of tangy bleu cheese, while sumptuous, have curiously kept themselves out of view.

Image of Francisco Goya's 'Saturn Devouring His Son,' which features a larger than life male figure with long, grizzled hair and bulging eyes desperately clutching in both hands a lifeless corpse. Where the creature's hands grip the body, blood appears to gush from the indentations in its back and from the base of its neck and right arm, which reveal a missing head and limb. The figure looks on in shock as the left arm is swallowed up in its maw.

They did capture these critical nuggets, tho--that's something.
Screenshot from a Block Club Chicago article titled 'Man Accused of Killing Chicago Police Officer in Swedish Hospital Shooting Pleads Not Guilty,' written by Molly DeVore and published June 10th, 2026. Black text against a white background reads as follows:

"A Freedom of Information Act Request filed by Block Club found that the Chicago Police Department was more than three days late in reporting the fatal shooting of officer Bartholomew to the state. Under Illinois law, all state and local government employers must report work-related fatalities within eight hours of their occurrence.

The Illinois Occupational Safety and Health Administration is conducting an investigation into the circumstances around Bartholomew’s death, department Spokesperson Paul Cicchini said. Cicchini said he could not comment further on the investigation."

Um. Is anyone able to explain the math on this? Assuming GPT-3 training's costs are relatively linear isn't it ~12-17x more (not 40-55x)?
Screenshot from the United Nation's
Institute for Water, Environment and Health report, titled 'Environmental Cost of AI's
Energy Use:
Carbon, Water and Land Footprints' featuring black text on a light blue background. In a section covering the main points it highlights training costs associated with AI and reads:

"The training of frontier models demands immense energy. GPT-4 likely
consumed 50 to 70 GWh of electricity over 100 days, roughly 40–55 times more
than GPT-3 (1.287 GWh over a 34-day period)."

The image features Black text on a white background written by Mpho Nana Davis Mac-Iyalla, Executive Director of the Interfaith Diversity Network of West Africa (IDNOWA).

It reads as follows, like a poem:

"The last few days’ news is heavy. It is painful. It is unjust.
But it is not the end of our story.

We have survived worse.

We have organised under harsher conditions.
We have built community in the shadows and in the light.
We have held each other through storms meant to erase us.

And we will continue.

Hope is not naïve. Hope is our inheritance.
Hope is our strategy.
Hope is our resistance."

I maintain that Hollywood is missing an opportunity--HUGE--by not bringing this lil guy to the big screen.
Image of a human-shaped mound of cheese whose head is a round with a small wedge cutout that is beset with two olives for eyes and a mouth of sizzled bacon. Flyer detailing a series of events put on by the Hands Off Uhuru Fightback Coalition. It features a man of African descent, Chairman Omali Yeshitela, in a grey beard and mustache wearing a black cap and matching coat while wrapped in several scarves alongside a man pointing in the distance while wearing in a denim jacket, Jesse Nevel; and a woman wearing dark sunglasses and a visor while long curls flow out and around the band, Penny Hess. The latter is speaking into a microphone while holding her hand proudly and defiantly in the air.

Events listed in the flyer include a community event the evening of Tuesday, July 21st, location and time to be determined; and note the appeal hearing will be the next day, Wednesday, July 22nd, at 9am and followed by public summation of and conference on the events. A group lunch is planned to follow both at noon. Beronda gets it. #LessonsFromPlants #YouAreNotATreeYouCanMove
Image taken of page 92 of Beronda Montgomery's book 'Lessons From Plants'. A vague outline of beige forefingers can be seen at the bottom of the page, which is propped up against a shaggy blue blanket. A sparse, wood-paneled floor can be seen in the background at the left edge of the image.

Lightly edited text reads as follows:

"Promoting change in human environments requires similar skills to those that plants display during ecological succession. In human institutions, or ecosystems, effective initial leaders of cultural change function as pioneers. Identifying and supporting individuals who possess the characteristics needed to promote change successively and synergistically towards developing and sustaining a new ecosystem is critical. Leaders who are effective trailblazers, like pioneer plants, are able to thrive while guiding change with limited or variable resources. They also recognize that even when an environment seems stable, the efforts of the pioneers can forge new directions and innovation.

In human succession... organizations often focus on group dynamics rather than recognizing and embracing the impact that individuals--especially effective change agents--can have on influencing desired cultural change. Accomplishing change requires leaders and trailblazers."Image taken of page 93 of Beronda Montgomery's book 'Lessons From Plants'. A vague outline of a shaggy blue blanket can be seen in the background.

Lightly edited text reads as follows:

"Pioneer plants in primary succession may need to emerge through barriers or put down roots in difficult places [but they] can often effect change with minimal resources or networks to support ideas, growth, and innovation. The effort of these individuals... leads to additional ecosystem changes that support the next wave of individuals needed to drive and sustain cultural change and institutional transformation.

The transformational goals of pioneers often require an initial period of disruption. Just as prescribed fires are needed for managing certain ecosystems, intentional disruptions may be required in human ecosystems to interrupt entrenched patterns or status quo thinking or action, and to move purposefully toward intended change outcomes. Although intentional disruption is often necessary, we should not overlook the reality that beneficial disruption opportunities can arise from ['bad' events or] intentions. For example, the 2016 election of a US president whom many Americans viewed as anti-woman and anti-science led to a national protest movement, including the 2017 Women's March and the March for Science."Image taken of page 94 of Beronda Montgomery's book 'Lessons From Plants'. A vague outline of beige forefingers can be seen near the bottom of the page as the book is propped against a shaggy blue blanket. A sparse, wood-paneled floor can be seen at the left edge of the image.

Lightly edited text reads as follows:

"We tend to ignore the need to introduce intentional disturbance or disruption, just as we do in fire-adapted ecosystems [but] significant changes [in/to] the composition of individuals may be required to move towards change targets. People often purport to desire significant changes to ecosystem structures in the pursuit of equity but ignore the need for real 'disturbance' to break away from the status quo community composition. An organization may need to reevaluate recruitment strategies and screening processes to promote the identification and recruitment of a broader range of individuals. We must understand that intervention and intentional disruption may be critical for supporting environments primed for the succession needed to support cultural change.

We can accomplish systemic change through multiple means... Strategic ways to initiate transformation start with reflection on and awareness of our current situation: identify the features of the local surroundings and what resources are available, and assess our needs. At the community level a subset of individuals, pioneers, can serve the whole by acting as 'sensors'. Such individuals are positioned to assess climate or rapid changes in the environment which require responses or innovations."Image taken of page 95 of Beronda Montgomery's book 'Lessons From Plants'.

Lightly edited text reads as follows:

"Everyone must recognize the importance of pioneers--those that have the traits needed to initiate robust culture change at the right time and place--and support the need for leaders to function in this pioneering way."

This is presently all that I'm able to see as I've blocked the other user. Are you saying that the content of my post was reproduced twice in response to them (i.e. created a 'double-post')... Or that you understand my most recent response to them to be repetitive (and potentially unnecessary)?
Screenshot of a thread of responses to the account with profile name Tiricohairline and involving user lama-j.bsky.social and profile name Jamal. Mine feature an image of the Buddha seated prayerfully, head bowed, amidst streams of characters cascading downwards in a Matrix-like aesthetic. Jamal's show a fair-skinned and bald man of African descent in a grizzled grey beard wearing a jet black hoodie with 'HBCU' written across it but partially obscured.

The first response to Tirico from me reads:
"If you're arguing that you have a right to carelessness and that that shouldn't be pointed out or criticized, we can end our engagement here. I'm only really interested in building relationships with those who understand the power of words and that exercise that power thoughtfully."

This is followed by a response from Jamal, who says:

"You just CARELESSLY typed 'that' twice" with carelessly bracketed for emphasis and that quoted to refer to my response to Tirico.

I responded to ask:

"I'm only seeing one post on my end. What do you see?"

Jamal's most recent response to that was:

"You might be carelessly reading what you carelessly typed. Exercise your power thoughtfully... take your time and read it again."

From the text:
Image from the Introduction of Julian Go's "Policing Empires: Militarization, Race, and the Imperial Boomerang in Britain and the US."

Edited text reads:

"To better understand the boomerang effect and police militarization, we might first listen closely to the victims, such as the founders of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense [BPP] in the United States in the 1960s. In 1967, Bobby Seale, a leading figure of the [BPP] wrote: 'The racist military police force occupies our community just like the foreign American troops in Vietnam.' The organ of the party, The Black Panther, similarly announced: 'The police action in Vietnam is no different from the police action in the Black Ghettos of America. The police occupy our Black communities like a foreign troop occupies territory.'

...

The Black Panthers thus put their finger on the boomerang effect precisely [and] their critiques... help us dissolve the puzzle of militarization... The civil police, theoretically, is protecting citizens [so] policing should be peaceful... The military-colonial police, meanwhile, are... repressing ostensibly inferior subjects, and therefore employ 'uncivil' tools... The militarization of policing through the boomerang effect means that these boundaries are transgressed. Citizens are treated like colonial subjects. But why? Why have police imported colonial methods used abroad for use on citizens? How is it that the so-called civil police have come to treat citizens as if they are enemies? Armed with [BPP] insights, the answer is plain: [domestic] police use colonial modes of coercion on citizens... because police see citizens AS colonial subjects. And... the key social code by which this miraculous transubstantiation of citizens into subjects occurs is racialization... By racialization, citizens are constructed to be inferior, dangerous, and violent just like colonized peoples. Racialization thereby warrants... the importation of militarized tools, tactics, and technologies."

I'm not impressed. At all. #COP30 www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Screenshot from Fiona Harvey's article in The Guardian, titled "'Fossil fuel giants finally in the crosshairs': Cop30 avoids total failure with last-ditch deal" and published Monday, November 24th, 2025. It details the negotiations and talks of world players at this year's COP30 summit in Belém, Brazil. The cropped text reads:

"Alongside the oblique commitment in the legally agreed text of the deal, countries will begin work on a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels, but this will be largely a voluntary initiative, led by Brazil, that will report back next year. Addressing the cuts in greenhouse gas emissions needed in order for the world to stay within the 1.5C limit was also put off to next year. Developing countries secured a tripling to $120bn of annual finance to help them adapt to the impacts of extreme weather, but that sum will not be delivered in full until 2035. Workers will benefit from a 'just transition mechanism' to help people working in high-carbon industries to shift to the clean economy, but commitments to include 'critical minerals' – needed for renewable energy components, but whose extraction has been dogged by human rights abuses – were excised, at the behest of China and Russia."

Considering I was formally diagnosed with GAD three years ago, this is... kind of remarkable. #selfhealing

Yeah, the Tribune Editorial Board tried similar. In 2023. With the Black progressive mayor Mamdani's field organizing strategy emulated. Lots of backhanded compliments, casual antiblackness, voter condescendion, and attempts at narrative manipulation. www.chicagotribune.com/2023/04/05/e...
Screenshot from the Chicago Tribune's Editorial Board article, published April 5th, 2023, and titled "Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson found a place in his acceptance speech for God. But not Barack Obama."

It reads:
"He found a place for God, but not, strikingly, for Barack Obama, inarguably the most important leader this city ever has produced. The omission was telling, a reminder that the progressive movement of which Johnson now is a Midwest standard-bearer, feels ambivalent about the former Chicago community organizer and his more pragmatic legacy.

The city, and the nation, have traveled far away from 2004, when Obama delivered the unforgettable keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in front of 9 million viewers and began his meteoric rise. Many of Johnson’s most enthusiastic voters were still in middle school."Screenshot from the Chicago Tribune's Editorial Board article, published April 5th, 2023, and titled "Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson found a place in his acceptance speech for God. But not Barack Obama."

It reads:
"But there’s another factor we saw at our endorsement meetings. Given the stated philosophy of this page, with its longtime belief in limited government, transparency in public leadership, freedom of speech, public safety as a priority and its pro-business outlook, Johnson and his campaign surely surmised that he had an uphill battle to gain our endorsement.

And, indeed, he did not. We already had concerns about the growing scope of influence and radicalism of the Chicago Teachers Union before their preferred candidate landed in the runoff. And we also felt there were better progressive candidates who did not have the backing of so powerful a union, and who had done a better job at actually answering some of the harder questions rather than wriggling rhetorically away."

Encouraging. Raising taxes on fuel purchases will sensibly improve the state's position on climate while increasing fare tax rates across the board should improve CTA efficiency and access for Chicagoans. #transportation #freedomofmovement
Screenshot of an image from an article in Capitol News Illinois titled, 'Latest Chicago transit funding plan appears to avoid statewide tax increases' by Ben Szalinski and published October 30th, 2025.

It reads:
"The bulk of the funding, $860 million, would come through redirecting sales tax revenue charged on motor fuel purchases to public transportation operations. Another estimated $200 million would come from interest growing in the Road Fund — a state fund that is typically used for road construction projects but can also be used for transportation-related purposes under the state constitution.

The plan calls for raising the existing Regional Transportation Authority sales tax by 0.25 percentage points, to 1% in Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Will counties and 1.25% in Cook County. That tax hike will generate $478 million."

There's still time to fill out a witness slip for Illinois' legislative session tonight to fund public transit, according to @betterstreetschicago.org. Directions and the link below: ilga.gov/House/hearin...
Screenshot of an email from the transit advocacy group Better Streets Chicago requesting that Illinois residents file witness slips in support of a legislative funding package.

White text on a black background reads:
"How to file a witness slip:
1. Follow the link and fill out your contact information
3. Under 'firm/business' put 'self' or your workplace if authorized)

4. Under 'representation' put 'self' again

5. Under 'position' choose subject matter 'SB2111' and 'proponent'
6. Under 'testimony' choose 'record of appearance only'
7. Then agree to the terms and click 'Submit Witness Slip'"

There is no #2, likely missed in the rush to get the message out. Beneath the text is a dark blue button that reads "File a witness slip!"

Probably best to refer to the people whose lives were RUINED by this device as 'enslaved persons' rather than 'slaves'. Spirits don't take kindly to casual dehumanization and they move VERY QUICKLY this time of year.
