We're interoperable, so you can be sovereign. Digital sovereignty needs open standards. That means freedom to mix backend components, and vendor-agnostic federation to connect on your terms. We build on @matrix.org - the open standard no single vendor can own, control, or shut down.
element.io
We’re interoperable, so you can be sovereign
Interoperability is the foundation of digital sovereignty; it’s the key ingredient to ensure that end-users stay in control, rather than the vendor.

the root cause here looks to be that the tarball doesn't include an element-desktop.desktop file, unlike the deb pkg. Will file a bug; agreed that providing a token to copy-paste for this scenario might help too.

Element @element.io · 02/05/2026
Yup, the tradeoff is that you get passwd mgr integration, MFA, passkeys, QR login, HW token support, refresh tokens, consistent auth regardless of app, shared auth between clients, delegated access (in future), standards-based auth and users stop pasting their acc passwd into random Matrix clients.

github.com/element-hq/e... is where it registers, which on Arch apparently calls out to `xdg-settings set default-url-scheme-handler`. The problem is presumably that you need a .desktop file to track the URI association. Not an Arch user, but claude.ai/share/101de6... looks helpful.

agreed that standardising on OIDC for auth is somewhat opinionated, but most folks seem to agree the benefits outweigh the inconvenience of involving a browser. the key insight is that the context you’re logging into is the server (with auth provided by that server as a webapp) rather than a client.
200
Element @element.io · 02/05/2026
looks like element has failed to register itself as a URI handler to allow the callback from the browser to work. What package did you end up using?
100
Element @element.io · 02/05/2026
sorry you’re having problems. what distro and desktop env this? the linux packages we publish should be where they always were: element.io/en/download#.... The reason it uses the browser for OIDC login is to share a single auth context for password managers, passkeys etc.

Element @element.io · 22/04/2026
okay, what is “this issue” though? UTD when logging in? after verifying the device via recovery key? or via confirming on another device? or for new messages when previously ones were okay? or when opening an existing session after a few days? or when viewing scrollback predating your login?

it’s possible that there’s some scenario that we’re simply not aware of which folks are hitting but not submitting bug reports for, so if you see this in the wild *PLEASE* report it so we can investigate. Like the OP here.
110
Element @element.io · 22/04/2026
the only scenarios we know where you get UTDs today are if you log out of all your devices and can’t decrypt msgs sent while you were gone - or if you log in and don’t verify your identity and so can’t access your backup. (or if you are using an old buggy app that predates our fixes).
200
Element @element.io · 22/04/2026
okay. the problem is that basically any encryption bug results in the same symptom “unable to decrypt message” but can have very different causes. it simply should never happen these days. can you please submit debug logs from the app after it’s happened from Settings. Also what app version is this?
220
Element @element.io · 22/04/2026
is this on web/desktop, iOS or Android? if on mobile, is this Element Classic or Element X? what does “voided” look like? is the message history undecryptable? is this after verifying the device by entering the recovery key or confirming the login on another device? just trying to narrow it down.
120
Element @element.io · 22/04/2026
Most known encryption problems got fixed in 2024 - it’s not clear what issue you’re hitting here, otherwise we’d love to sort it :) What app & platform is it, and what happened? Could it be that the user didn’t set up recovery and so lost their history when they logged in fresh?
