If you know anything about smogon's struggles, it's that 1v1 is an absolute nightmare for competition. It's ridiculously easy for things to snowball and for matches to be determined before the first turn even starts as accounting for every single enemy threat is nigh impossible.

Every black mage starts knowing no spells! Well, Porom and Lulu have some already known. Vivi can't not have one because you can't unequip weapons in 9. And there's a lot in spinoffs in various states of knowing. Most black mages start knowing no spells.

Depends on the game, the status effects, and the means to apply them. FF2, almost everything is open to Frog. FF8, vit0 resistance doesn't exist. FF6, exactly what you describe, especially relative to your ability to just deal damage and win.
