For those of you still waiting on the big reveal, it was indeed Hungary! Hungary's electricity system tells a clear structural story over the past three-and-a-half years: solar has exploded, coal has withered, gas has grown as a winter peaker, and nuclear has held its ground as the backbone.
An Electricity Maps chart of the Electricity Mix in Hungary from 2023-present. Nuclear, solar, and coal are the largest power sources.

We're playing a game of Guess The Grid around the Electricity Maps office this week! Which European nation's grid is represented in this Electricity Mix chart from 23 April 2026? No peeking at the app, map, or MCP allowed, of course... at least not until after you reply with your guess.
An Electricity Mix chart from Electricity Maps about an unidentified European nation's grid on a single day in April 2026.

Nuclear provides between 40-60%, with solar, wind, water, and gas also contributing. Solar peaks at around 40% int he middle of the day, but there's no sign of batteries in this chart to carry its impact deeper into the evening.

Ask it to investigate a grid event, isolate cross-border causes, or develop and test trading strategies. It runs the SQL queries, builds the charts, and walks through its reasoning. No manual querying required.

Solar production increased year-over-year from 2024 to 2025 in Denmark, and coal production was down, also contributing to lower carbon intensity.
A table from the Electricity Maps 2025 grid review for Denmark listing how each energy source contributed to production and consumption in 2024 and 2025. Wind is still the largest energy source for Denmark, at 58.7% of production for 2025, a slight decrease from 2024. Solar production was up 2.6 percentage points in 2025, and coal was down 2 percentage points.

In Denmark, imported hydro and nuclear helped reduce overall carbon intensity in 2025, while exported wind power reduced carbon intensity elsewhere.
A chart from the Electricity Maps 2025 grid review for Denmark showing the domestic energy production mix and the flow-traced consumption mix that accounts for imports and exports. Imported hydro and nuclear helped reduce overall carbon intensity, and exported wind likely avoided some curtailment.

➡️ Duck Curve: Evening ramp of 16.3 GW from belly (12:00) to evening peak (18:00). More flexible dispatchable generation or storage could help meet rapidly increasing demand as solar output decreases. 4/5
A chart from the Electricity Maps year in review for Germany 2025, showing the Net Load pattern over a 24 hour period. Solar and wind capacity peak in the middle of the day when load is at its lowest; less solar and wind are available during morning and evening peak load periods.
