When I started exploring the SLNSW protest archive I wanted to write a guidebook for activists, but - unsurprisingly ‘Quiet Protest’ ended up much more historical. Thanks to Hannah Viney for seeing my attempts to show how similar our struggles now are to those in the past. aph.org.au/2026/09/book...
This is not simply a history book but an eloquent and hopeful ode to modern human rights campaigns. For anyone involved in protest in 2026, this book provides both examples and inspiration for rethinking how to build a thriving activist community. Karageorgos draws links between the methods used in the 1960s with modern protest, demonstrating to readers how the efforts of activists 60 years ago can inform current campaigns. In 1966, 58 writers issued a collective statement condemning conscription; in 2023, over 30 independent presses, poets, writers and translators hosted a Global Reading for Freedom of Expression and Solidarity with Palestine and Lebanon with readings and performances livestreamed for 24 hours on YouTube. The tactics and the supporters are the same, it is only the technology and platform that has been updated.

It’s Week 1 of semester and the first day of teaching in my new long-awaited (at least by me) course HIST2253: Bodies and Brains: Histories of Illness, Disability and Disease. Today I’ll talk to the students a bit about pain, death, disability histories/activism and social control. I’m so excited 🎉.

Watching the World Cup on SBS reminds me of how much SBS has been a staple for Greek-Australian (& other) communities. I remember visiting family friends with my parents as a kid where SBS was on in the background all day, in case a Greek show came on. An absolute institution for so many Australians
