Yeah. Quoting my own character here, but it's true. Despite all the imbecilic, infuriating 💩 that occurs here, there is another side to the Gulf Coast, and that's the side I love. It's the side I wrote about. #lgbtfiction #environmentalfiction #writing #indiewriter www.amazon.com/dp/B0GG5XRN8P

But to be absolutely sure, if something is not listed on my personal website (www.eleanorthorne.net), I didn't write it. And I will absolutely never use generative AI for writing or illustration, including book covers. What you see in my books came directly from my own brain, for better or worse!

I write in the genres of terrestrial #sciencefiction and contemporary #environmentalfiction. If I decide to write in another genre in the future, you'll be the first to know. So far I haven't seen this person's books anywhere else, whereas my books are widely available as paperback and hardcover.

I'm sharing it as context, because someone on Goodreads is doing just this: Churning out dozens of obviously AI-generated mysteries under the same pen name I use. I don't know if the latter is intentional. Just be aware it isn't me.

Have latched onto a potential idea for novel number 3. I'm not going to say much, because story ideas for me are like dating: I need to get to know them very well before deciding to commit. But this one is #scifi #clifi, it could be pretty original, and Inheritors readers would like it. #writing

So is #ButlerianJihad a thing now? I don't mean the hashtag; I mean the concept. It's starting to look like we're getting there. As long as it doesn't take down scientific machine learning (particularly medical, as a part of the war on cancer), I can't really say anything against it.

I was getting sales reports for The Inheritors for library checkouts, which told me that people were looking to read it from sources other than Bezos. Life can present unusual challenges to a MAHA-crazed, supplement-popping manosphere podcaster. At least, that's how this particular fictional one would see it. Others would say his challenges were entirely self-inflicted. And they're far bigger than puzzling out imagined sunscreen conspiracies.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the Nolan Wells case. I wouldn't exploit an event like that. I'd already titled and registered it with Bowker long before his death.

Just to get this out there: My second novel is a political and environmental comedy involving the critically endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle, which nests on one of our barrier islands. The title is a metaphor throughout most of the book, but it becomes quite literal in the last chapter.

I am at the point where Facebook has become my preferred social media outlet for interacting as a writer. It lets me post the essays that I want to write. We are all guilty. We all built this. I'm here, as you see. And I've curated my own subscriptions, like this one, that tell me what makes me feel vindicated. I'm guilty too. If you read THE INHERITORS and thought it was too grim, this sort of realization is where I was coming from when I wrote it.

The second is *exactly* the kind of pseudo-activism that drives me bananas, as an atmospheric scientist who is profoundly concerned and wants to see *real* solutions to go to zero. It's not what you, little Joe and Jane Citizen, are doing that's the problem. We can prove that with models.

In addition, returns hurt the used-bookstore sector (and libraries). If the way to get rid of a book and also recoup some money is to resell it, that's actually great! We should support used bookstores. They make books available to more people, including poorer and more frugal readers. It's win-win.

000

Eleanor Thorne @eleanorthorne.net · 15/07/2025

Regarding returns, I think we should stop accepting them anyway. There are horror stories of indie writers being bankrupted by return costs from IngramSpark from wholesale-bulk purchases that got sent back. One in particular involved a charge of $60,000 to a writer from such a bulk return.

100

Eleanor Thorne @eleanorthorne.net · 15/07/2025

I am running an experiment: What happens if you IGNORE the advice? I set the wholesale discount at the lowest allowed % and disabled returns. Yes, this means bookstores won't buy it in bulk. But they won't anyway. Indie books sell on demand. This means I can sell it at $22.99 and get a royalty.

100

Eleanor Thorne @eleanorthorne.net · 15/07/2025

IngramSpark has a lot of complaints, to put it mildly. And it's true that, if you are indie and you follow its default recommendations, it's hard to see how you'll sell many hardcover books. 55% wholesale discount basically means you have to ask $30 USD. Ouch. And then there are the return issues.

100

Eleanor Thorne @eleanorthorne.net · 15/07/2025

Now I am releasing a hardcover edition. It'll come out on August 1. I am using IngramSpark for this, because the only KDP hardcover option is a cover pasted onto the board. No dust jacket. I wanted a dust jacket. That LOOKS like a novel. KDP's option would be better for a large-print edition.

100

Eleanor Thorne @eleanorthorne.net · 15/07/2025

The Amazon paperback is notably cheaper (currently $12.99 USD there, whereas I have it priced at $16.99 in the d2d distro network). It's sold a lot better. I haven't had any complaints about print quality from either source, so I have to give Amazon the W here for price. I hate that, but so it is.

🧵For my books, I have now tried several services. I compile my own ebooks, because I'm a LibreOffice/calibre/Sigil superuser, so this thread is about the printing services. I've got THE INHERITORS printing as a paperback from both draft2digital and KDP. It's identical and I own the ISBN, so I can.
