I do think it's neat to work in TTRPGs and NOT have DnD be my entry point to the hobby and industry. DnD wasn't even on my radar till 5e came out in 2014! By then I'd been playing the like of Inquisitor, Dark Heresy, and Warhammer Fantasy RPG for YEARS.

Crazy to think that without Inquisitor, I'd have a completely different life and career (I'd likely be a Psychologist). I picked it up on a whim a few years before university and it was the first time I sat forward and said "Wait... you can tell STORIES with GAMES?" it completely rewrote my brain.

Such a weirdly clunky game, full of obfuscated and complicated systems, and bugs aplenty. But man, when it all comes together it’s amazing. Big orchestral swelling music as you hold on for dear life to a falling cyclops to stab it in the eye. Hook it into my veins.

Back on my Dragons Dogma 2 shit this weekend. Low-key love a dark fantasy game world that feels like it just doesn’t give two shits that you’re there. Saw a griffon land nearby. Thought ‘Hey it’s beside the starting town, I bet we can take it’. Narrator: ‘They, in fact, could not take it.’

I grew up in Glasgow in the 90s and so many folk seem to forget or downplay how bad it got! Folk laugh in disbelief when I say if you went to the wrong part of the city wearing the wrong colour you’d get chibed! Glasgow is way chiller nowadays IMO, there’s just more camera on the streets.

I’ve even found myself in past roles where we’ve had long term pay freezes, and asked if we could at least ease the non-compete clauses so we could try make some money on the side via freelance work etc, only to be refused. It’s a horrible anti-worker mentality.

Unfortunately anti-worker non-compete or creative ownership clauses are common in games dev. I’ve fought against them my entire career, so I’m thrilled to see folk talking about them in a high profile case like this. Fun fact: One of the reasons I joined RRD is cause we’re morally opposed to them!

e.g. The average con panel I'm on might be 'Designing Boss Monsters' or 'City Building' etc. Topics that ARE useful to professionals, but are mostly aimed at an audience of hobbyists. At Pyrkon/DEEP I was on panels about book design/manufacturing! Information flow! Translating IPs! It was amazing.

The best conference for TTRPG educational panels I've been to is DEEP in Poland. It's a tiny offshoot of Pyrkon explicitly aimed towards industry education, discussion, and networking. It's the first time I've spent all day stuck in the weeds on deeper topics than convention panels normally allow.

I do A LOT of panels at conventions and I think about this way too much: What's their purpose? What makes one 'good'? How can they improve? I think the lion's share of TTRPG panels are mostly entertainment and/or marketing. Educational panels are my favourite, by far, but are comparatively rare.

I have THOUGHTS about picking the right TTRPG system for the right game time/energy level. It doesn't feel like something folk talk about though? As if they find a game they like and try to squeeze it into every time slot they can. But like, you wouldn't eat a steak for every meal, would you?

I tend to mix it up a bunch and tailor the games to the time we're playing: - Mid-week night? System-light episodic narrative games. - Friday night? Relaxed beer-and-pretzles adventure/dungeon crawls. - Day long session? Big meaty game with lots of detailed roleplay and maybe crunchy systems.

Just left A showing of Hope at the local cinema and, guys, you gotta see this film with a crowd if you can. I strongly recommend going in blind like I did! Just trust me! It‘s some of the most fun I’ve had at the cinema in years. An absolute riot of ‘WTF’ moments made even better with a crowd.

IMO One of the best things you can do as a writer/designer is carefully curate a group of close friends *COUGH suckers *COUGH who buy a lot of books and happily lend them to you. I swear, any time I look at my TTRPG to-read-pile about half of them are loaners. I might even return some one day!
