For me, in the first and third example, I'd assume it uses AI. In the second, I assume it doesn't. It feels like having onus be on non-AI-users is trying to subconsciously flip world creation towards using AI as the default. An arguably pro-AI stance. But AI is not the default in creative work.

Actually, I just realized what bothered me the most about the #VRChat survey: They included questions asking if I wanted worlds to be able to show a "Made with no AI" label and if I would use it. I answered that I didn't want it to exist, but I would use it.

It sucks that this reads as pro-AI enough that I felt it would be a good prank to sneak some harmless prompt injection into the survey form. They say they're going to read them, but this is probably the first time I don't believe them.

Theoretically they should not allow anyone actively using genAI to be in the creator economy or marketplace. That needs to be MUCH stricter or the entire shop gets called into question. I'm not paying for anything if it might be slop. Figure out detecting as you go, not like there's a guide.

They conflate slop with low quality when "AI Slop" is ANYTHING generated. Good looking slop is slop. A drop of sewage in a cup of water makes a cup of sewage. And it's NOT complicated. Make it clear that not following the rules results in penalties. Upload-ban people who break them.

Ultimately, HOW they handle it will also factor into my decision. Disclosure and filtering is a bare minimum, but there's always better. They need to not just say something, but own up to the mistakes they made in featuring worlds that use it. It's shameful they haven't. Address me. 🐘

That's the other reason I first subscribed: that subscription is our leverage for when the business people want to take it astray. But individual cancellations over time give them a grace period to pivot. A lot of people cancelling en mass is an emergency.

Given how they've not been quick to backtrack thus far, either the company's opinion on generated content is knowingly unpopular or there's a LOT of internal turmoil. Probably both. It may come down to how we as a community work to sway their opinion. And business only speaks the language of money.

So on one side, the community is starting to boil over. On the other, the people in charge of the decision are probably business idiots unwilling to make VRC less attractive to other business idiots. In the middle is VRChat's community team, who are in an unenviable position.

I also get that this all puts VRC in a tight place. Right now, business is in a stupid-ass place where the only way to get investment is by saying "AI" ten times a minute because most MBAs are drooling idiots who forget that we live for 75 years. Obligatory fuck capitalism.

THAT is why this matters to the people who matter the most here, the creators, and why it should matter to EVERYONE in VRC. People are tired of gentech infesting and ruining their spaces, hobbies, and lives. I may not be anyone important, but I have a bsky and a cancel sub button, I guess.

When one sees success, a hundred of them descend in a swarm of not-so-figurative locusts bent on a singular goal: get that bag by any means necessary. Theft is rife. Lies are a lifestyle. Cheat the metrics. Game the system. Any means.

Now, many of my friends are 2D and/or 3D artists. Over the years, I've seen and heard and read how slop affects artists of all kinds. I've seen an endless wave of despair; I've heard of an indefatigable enemy; I've read how, where the will exists to fend off one, ten more of them appear.

But in introducing the creator economy and opening it up to applicants, VRC unknowingly sent themselves down this path. One where nobody could have possibly seen the collision point where concerns of generative technology... Okay, maybe that was 2025. Let's be real.

I also don't mind the recent pivot VRC has done towards their marketplace. I think it's pretty great, actually. Props and items are fun. (If you think the marketplace is VRChat enshittifying, you need to actually read Doctorow's 2023 article where the term was popularized)

VRChat is a lot bigger now, in more than just population. It's a real social platform with its big boy pants on trying to make it in the world. I subscribed to VRC+ the moment it became available because I knew what happens to the things I don't contribute back to: they either enshittify or die.

When I joined VRChat in 2019, it felt akin to an early-mid 2000s Internet. With its decently-sized community and insular memes moulding worlds like The Cupboard or the Obamids, the kind of worlds that someone would make just for the fun of it. A simpler time, with simpler incentives.

Realistically, the best result would likely come from organizing a mass subscription cancellation if they don't address it by some date. People individually cancelling VRC+ might not catch enough attention, but a ton of people saying they will could get a ton more people on board.

Flying like this is only possible in worlds that use a system called OpenFlight, it's a part of the world itself. Flight is achieved by using your arms as wings, flapping and gliding both work. Gravity is a part of OpenFlight, so you'll always be forced down if you stop flapping
