Hold up, you can go live on Bluesky now? A lot happened in 11 months. Maybe I should try posting here more often. Some personal news, here's a recent photograph.

Not sure if praiseworthy or embarrassing, but either way? I missed my calling.

I will change my mind next week, but for now this is a reasonable list.

Play at least one Brian Wilson song tonight. Just do it. You won’t feel better, but it’s kind of beautiful to imagine everyone collectively listening to him and remembering how lucky we all were to have him.

Sly Stone was uniquely visionary, an innovator. He was a complete original. His creative output was meteoric, his influence nearly un-quantifiable. I got to be alive at the same time as he was, to be influenced by him, and for that I’m deeply grateful. Rest in eternal paradise.

Will never forget seeing Sugarcubes performing a surprise show at CBGB under the name "Sykurmolar" (which, if it appeared as a surprise show today, someone would instantly know is Icelandic for "Sugarcube"). Someone from Farmingdale State was there, too. Here's their article.

I don't know if anyone's watching #TOCVI / #TOC6 on Food Network, but if you are... they revealed (at least to my visual eye) that one of the judges for the finals next week will be Martha Stewart. They didn't say that's who it is, but they showed her pulling up and walking in. Unmistakable.

It seems that @paramountplus.com has cornered the market on gritty, violent dramas & they're absolutely on fire. All the Taylor Sheridan projects, sure, but check out #MobLand with Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren. Guy Ritchie directed the first two EP's at least & it's quite good.

E.J. Friedman @ejfriedman.me · 03/04/2025

For anyone who is forced to still use Amazon, be on the lookout: Amazon has begun removing the Country of Origin listing on their products, something they are required by law to show on every item. Some items do show it, but many listings have removed this information entirely.

It can't really be overstated: Netflix's #Adolescence is the great limited series of 2025 & it doesn't even feel close. Acting, directing, cinematography are all spectacular. Painful to watch, but pretty much a peerless show. Have you finished it? If you did, what did you think?

The documentary I just watched in IMAX, #OneToOne, is meticulously revealing about John Lennon & Yoko Ono's NYC life in 1972. It comes out April 11th & I'll say more soon. The political climate the film captures deeply parallels the one we're living in. It's not a Beatles doc, it's way more. See it.

It's a day of heartbreaking passages, folks. Terry Manning, the recording engineer and producer behind so much great music at Ardent Studios (Big Star, Rufus Thomas, Al Green, Bjork, and on and on) has passed away. Confirmed through mutual friends. A stunning loss. RIP, Terry.

I knew the answer to this, but decided to ask ChatGPT what has traditionally happened to fascist dictators throughout history just to see what it would say.

What has traditionally happened to fascist dictators throughout history?
ChatGPT said:

Fascist dictators throughout history have typically met violent ends, forced exile, or legal consequences once their regimes collapse. Here are some common outcomes:
1. Violent Deaths

Many fascist leaders have been overthrown and killed by their own people or opposition forces.

Benito Mussolini (Italy) – Captured by Italian partisans in 1945, executed, and hung upside down in a public square.
Adolf Hitler (Germany) – Committed suicide in his bunker in 1945 as Soviet forces closed in.
Ion Antonescu (Romania) – Tried and executed in 1946 after a coup removed him from power.

2. Forced Exile

Some dictators fled their countries to avoid capture and execution.

Juan Perón (Argentina) – Ousted in 1955, lived in exile in Spain before returning to power.
Fulgencio Batista (Cuba) – Fled to Portugal after Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959.
Ante Pavelić (Croatia, Nazi puppet state) – Escaped to Argentina but was assassinated in exile.

3. Trials and Imprisonment

Some were captured and put on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Hideki Tojo (Japan, WWII leader) – Tried by the Allies and executed in 1948.
Slobodan Milošević (Serbia/Yugoslavia) – Arrested and put on trial for war crimes but died in custody.
Augusto Pinochet (Chile) – Arrested for human rights abuses but avoided full prosecution due to legal battles.

4. Temporary Survival, Then Collapse

Some fascist leaders held power for decades before their regimes crumbled.

Francisco Franco (Spain) – Ruled until his natural death in 1975, but his regime ended immediately after.
Muammar Gaddafi (Libya) – Ruled for 42 years before being overthrown and killed by rebels in 2011.

Conclusion: A Pattern of Downfall

While some fascist dictators lived long lives in exile, most faced violent deaths, trials, or permanent exile once their regimes collapsed. Their downfall was often driven by public uprisings, military defeat, or international intervention.

Would you like insights on a specific dictator or period?

If you're in Los Angeles on Friday 21 March, Andrew VanWyngarden (of #MGMT) is DJ'ing under the name A. Deeplove. I expect it will be a nice blend with Swedish house music producer Axel Boman. Tickets are limited if you're thinking of going. ra.co/events/2097880
