“We want to see legal, sustainable, and ethical seafood on our plates and in our markets.” Yesterday, EJF CEO and Founder Steve Trent spoke on a panel at OPAGAC’s Hands for the Ocean in @europarl.europa.eu. He called for transparency to end #IUU fishing and human rights abuses at sea. #OceanWeek

⚠️ The plastic we live with every day is quietly poisoning us ⚠️ We’ve released our shocking research: 92.8% of the chemicals we assessed in everyday plastic items are linked to cancer, infertility and heart disease. Almost none are controlled.

Thank you to our hosts, speakers and fellow NGOs, and to everyone who joined us. The Ocean Act proposal is due by the end of 2026. We will keep pushing for it to deliver 💙

2️⃣ At the Blue NGOs’ Ocean Act reception, hosted by MEP Christophe Clergeau, MEPs, ministers and the Commission heard our shared call: turn existing commitments into coherent, enforceable action that works for people and planet.

1️⃣ “Protection that pays” showed that Marine Protected Areas pay off for nature, fishers and coastal communities when they are managed and protected, not just drawn on a map. The #EUOceanAct must put 30% protection of EU waters by 2030, with 10% strictly protected, into EU law.

On Tuesday, the EJF EU team co-organised two #OceanWeek events at the European Parliament, and the rooms were full 🌊 One message ran through both: Europe does not need new ocean promises. It needs to deliver the ones it has made 🧵

Step 3️⃣: Make enforcement visible. Member States must publish comparable data on monitoring, control effort, infringements and sanctions. Cross-border checks must connect vessel identity to enforcement decisions and public funding records.

Step 2️⃣: Verify what's caught. Remote electronic monitoring (REM) on high-risk vessels from January 2028 must happen on schedule.

Step 1️⃣: Prioritise bycatch avoidance. Sorting grids reduce unwanted catches by 77-100%. We need fishery-specific technical measures, investment and incentives.

🚨 The wrong signal was sent today: Going against the evidence, the European Parliament has voted to revise the Common Fisheries Policy #CFP. Fishers don't need years of uncertainty; they need the rules that already exist to be delivered, so fish populations their livelihoods depend on can recover.
“The European Parliament's call today to revise the Common Fisheries Policy sends the wrong signal, and it runs against the evidence...The problem was never the law, it is the failure to implement and enforce it.”

🦑 Argentine shortfin squid is one of the largest unregulated fisheries left on the high seas. But what does "unregulated" look like? It means no independent observers, no verified catch reporting, no flag state answering for what happens on board.
High seas. Low oversight.

Major squid fisheries remain exposed to illicit activity.

At COFI, member states should work to close governance gaps and help improve collaboration, transparency and accountability.

🪝 Transparency - knowing who is catching what, where, when and how, so we can make progress for a safe, sustainable ocean. As fish populations decline in many regions, unscrupulous fishing fleet operators have turned to illegal fishing, human trafficking, slavery and other abuses to cut costs.

It’s time to end the pile-up of plastic in our bodies and planet 🚨 Plastic shapes daily life in ways we often hardly notice. The food we eat, bottles and utensils, the air we breathe - it all contains plastic particles that make their way into our system and risk serious damage to our health.

🌱 Mangrove forests bring life to the planet. In Ghana, the rapid destruction of mangrove forests threatens the health of coastal ecosystems and community livelihoods. Mangroves shelter animal species, nurture fisheries, guard shorelines from erosion and storms and sequester vast amounts of carbon.

At sea, workers often experience physical violence, threats, and inhumane and dangerous working conditions. Food is often rotten or unsafe to eat, and medical care is often withheld. Isolated and abused, the mental and physical damage is severe, even driving some people to take their own lives.

Sea turtles are ocean stewards. They graze on seagrass, maintain coral reefs, and regulate jellyfish, which ensures healthy fisheries and habitats. The beaches of Grand Kru are among the most important nesting sites for sea turtles in Liberia.

🦈 Illegal shark finning still takes place on tuna vessels in the Atlantic. Our recent investigation has exposed how the port of Dakar is used as the gateway to the global shark fin trade. Perpetrators can land the fins at port and conceal them without inspection, despite regulations.

Environmental Justice Foundation @ejfoundation.org · 16/07/2026
🌊 Shark finning is a cruel practice of removing a shark’s fins before discarding it into the sea. They are sometimes still alive and unable to swim, so they slowly suffocate. Sharks are vital for marine ecosystems, yet they are under threat. We must do more to protect them.
