Been reading up on resources for how you might get a basic dialogue generator for a game in place that works more broadly than just templates, and I found out there's an ISO standard for Dialogue. www.iso.org/standard/764...

I thought Warframe was just another weird sci-fi techy robot looter shooter that was not worth reading about. This is the best endorsement of it I've ever heard!

Rubber Ducking #webcomic #krita #miniFantasyTheater
A comic in four panels:

Panel 1. Cepper, the Gothic Sorceress, is at her iconic desk with a quill, she was writing in her big personal project: her book of incantation at university. She is thinking with intensity bringing the quill to her mouth, looking up and frowning. On a stack of book, nearby, stands a yellow static rubber duck.
> Cepper: "Avian Intelligence, what is the correct incantation for a fireball? Hmm... You know, something _Pyro... Ball..._"

Panel 2. Cepper is now excited, the rubber duck is still silent, staring happily in the void.
> Cepper: "**PyroBolus!** Perfect."

Panel 3. Amall, the small blond elf sorceress appears in the frame from one side, she is puzzled at what she probably saw before. Cepper is laughing a bit of embarrassement.
> Amall: "**A rubber duck!?** But it can't answer you! Are you okay, Cepper?"
> Cepper: "Haha, don't worry Amall, I'm fine."

Panel 4. Cepper is happy and proud of her invention, Amall scratch her head but with a smile, considering the discovery of her friend.
> Cepper: "I just figured that formulating my questions out loud helps me to solve them, and finally that's all I needed."

The horror of creating a simulation of human needs and behaviors and how they meet those, only to realize that I am also a human who cannot escape those and thus must meet them. 😭

I do hold the general sentiment that every day life needs more whimsey, but, uh, that is an experience.

Timeless humour! A 2,000 year-old Roman souvenir pen with a joke inscription roughly equivalent to: “I went to Rome and all I got you was this cheap pen!" 😂 Dated circa 70 AD, this iron stylus pen was recovered in London during excavations by MOLA. 📷 Juan Jose Fuldain/MOLA #Archaeology
The photo by Juan Jose Fuldain for MOLA shows four images of the same Roman iron stylus (pen) one below the other, with knib to the left. The stylus is octagonal in shape, with a dot-punched inscription along its length on four alternate sides. The stylus is 132 mm long and 5 mm thick, and the letters are circa 2 mm high. The four images of the pen show the four lines of inscribed text (highlighted) which read:

'ab urbe v[e]n[i] munus tibi gratum adf (e)ro acul[eat]um ut habe[a]s memor[ia]m nostra(m)
rogo si fortuna darlelt quo possem
largius ut longa via ceu sacculus est (v)acuus'

Translated as

I have come from the City. I bring you a welcome gift with a sharp point that you may remember me.
I ask, if fortune allowed, that I might be able (to give) as generously as the way is long (and) as my purse is empty.'

This inscription is generally interpreted by scholars as a humorous, tongue-in-cheek acknowledgment by the giver of the cheapness of the gift.

I like to have a little lemon for drinks around, but I can never consume it fast enough before it goes bad. I stumbled across True Lemon, and wow am I impressed with these little packets. Delightful little lemon powder you just throw in your drink or rehydrate and use!

I feel like your fortification series kind of addresses this, along with the baggage train posts, but if I try to imagine what a soldier carried in the march as a manifest to requisition, I'm vague on the production and equipment list. What if I had a battalion designer in a Rome mod of HOI4?

Erin @einkleindatagal.com · 01/08/2026
Troop types, carried both martial equipment, and just marching equipment. I believe you've talked about portable grain mills before, I assume those were managed above the level of the individual. Same with things like a tent. Or else stuff that was part of the baggage train, camp followers, etc.

Erin @einkleindatagal.com · 01/08/2026
I think especially comparing it to modern militaries would really drive home the point of just how different forces operate today even with infantry compared to the past.

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social something I'd love covered in your worldbuilder series is basically a Table of Organization and Equipment for forces in your scope. You've talked before about it across multiple articles in the abstract and conceptual, but even a guess would make it more concrete.

I feel like this just unlocked something for me. Now instead of just knowing I can't do as well as I want at the craft I'm trying to achieve, I'm just improving myself. The poor results are just artifacts of my improvement.

This and a better representation of the principal-agent problem would go a long way towards making strategy games feel unique in how they handle different nations. Why the Roman state would be so much harder to collapse than a Hellenistic king, why their ally system was so effective.

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social This may be beyond your world builder series, but acoup.blog/2026/06/19/c... made me consider how you model societal capacity? I feel like games maybe capture this as mana rather than as a deeper system of engaging a population, much like recruiting being glossed over.

My country is not for cowards who fear difference, for lily-livered people who cannot bear the sound of a foreign tongue, the taste of a new food, the tempo of an unfamiliar kind of music. It is for the strong worker who welcomes new immigrants, not the slacker who fears the diligence of others.

@bretdevereaux.bsky.social Reading acoup.blog/2026/05/22/c... you use weight class frequently to differentiate troops. Would there be a meaningful difference between weapon types as well? Is weight the big one per unit?

With the recent update I decided to revisit Victoria 3, and I think one of my biggest frustrations with it is that there's so much more depth to the game than I interact with. As a middling bureaucrat simulator, this is good, but as a player of a game, I want richer context for decision making.

The Agroprom Tunnels in the original STALKER. I was so engrossed and scared going in when the graphics felt immersive and I'd just gotten surround sound headphones. Part way through I paused before entering a hallway because I was too scared to go in and just sat in my chair willing myself.

For Pikachu, their gender is reflected in the shape of their tail. Males have a flat tail, whereas females have a heart-shaped tail.

The Mimikyu in the picture is attempting to cheer up his transfem Pikachu friend by cutting out a heart from his own costume and taping it to the end of Pikachu's tail, giving it a more feminine appearance
