How is it that the media have no idea how the rest of the field feels? 😒

Extraction. That is all. How much would you like to tip this iPad for the pleasure of pressing on its screen? As we fire all the workers.

Me, just now at the airport after ordering lunch off a screen (and then having to explain to the person at the counter because the machine is stupid) “when can we go back to a human driven society?” 😞

Astigmatism! That explains it for me too. And I only discovered my astigmatism in my late 40s, but it’s been there all along. Probably why I never saw the images back in the 90s when they were all the rage.

No camera can capture the breathtaking depth and scale of the summit of Haleakala, but here is my attempt after the 7-mile no-oxygen almost-killed-me Sliding Sands hike. The sunset that followed made it all worth it.

Yeah, that’s the thing. Kids do want to actually learn stuff. I’m listening to my daughter and her friends head off to college taking about classes and learning. Shoving AI down their throats will suck the joy for learning way more than honework and tests and grades ever could.

It's mostly not about the technology, itself. They are angry about A.I. because they are anxious about how to be successful. No one in charge will tell them the new path to upward mobility. No seems to want to even figure one out. All anyone will talk to them about is A.I.

We have a multi million dollar center at our college for the “digital liberal arts” that sends out emails and feeling to “glam up” our canvas pages, while our TA budgets get cut so we have to offer fewer students support services.

You may not be surprised that I did speak up ☠️ and point out the ratio in the room. “Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you just look around this room…” I said And then I told them that when I walked in, even I felt like I didn’t belong.

Because clearly nothing is changing. (As evidenced by the fact that half the laments used “females” instead of “women” as if referring to livestock.)

There comes a time in a woman’s career when she is fully sick and tired of being in a room that is 80% (mostly older) men lamenting “where are all the women in STEM?” At this point, I just want to be excused from having to attend these types of things.

Speaking from experience, it would go a long way for both sides to be willing to have a mediated dialogue, which is how the therapy was presented. That willingness is evidence of not wanting to be cut off. A lot of times, it is plain old "my way or the highway", so the kid chooses the highway.

I mean, her dad offered to go to therapy. I suspect that those who go no contact had no one on the other side interested in mending the relationship.

Final conference of the summer! ✨ Myself, C. Andonie, J. Petley, E. Glikman, and T. Costa organised a Lorentz Center workshop on the role of obscured AGN in galaxy evolution. It was a really fun and inspiring week, meeting lots of amazing astronomers and learning a lot about dusty AGN! 🌌

This workshop aims to build new collaborations to define future observations needed to reconcile dusty AGN populations (JWST, ALMA, ELT, SKA), and to establish how future generations of theoretical models should address dust physics and its link to AGN feedback. bit.ly/4vOA640 @eilatg.bsky.social

My goodness the grift. SeatGeek wants to give me 110% “credit for my next event” instead of a refund for the show that was canceled. Nearly $1k! Because you can’t enjoy music like a normal person anymore. Absolute motherfuckers.

Planned a whole nyc weekend with my college-bound baby girl which included going to see Noah Kahan tonight. It rained all day. We got soaked. But it seemed to clear up just in time for the show to be canceled ☹️😢😭 (We were at the stadium when we found out!! I don’t see any rain 😠)

Oh yes, every summer with my daughter. It’s intense! There is a whole This American Life” episode (Notes on Camp) from decades ago on the camp intensity phenomenon. We listened to it in the car in the way home the first year with her.

But this puts the onus of learning on the teacher... We can only provide so much in the classroom. The rest is up to the student, and if one gets 100% on a midterm and a 20% on a final, I dont see an indictment of the teacher here.

Think of it this way: you are probably repaid by half, given the pricey sector equivalent. Do with that as you like 😉 (We all work too damn hard and it creates a permission structure for overwork. Ugh sigh. I’m part of the problem. Sometimes.)
