Really great thread here and this essay is wonderful. It makes me feel more sane for being long repulsed by this ghoul of a show.

It is a performance of joy so excessive, so desperate, that it reveals the void it attempts to cover. It is the logic of the assembly line applied to human connection. What Fallon offers is a standardized production of “fun” that feels increasingly like a desperate plea to ignore the crumbling world outside the studio walls.

Choir director: Alto 1s can sing the opening to John Rutter’s “Blow Blow Thou Winter Wind” if you’d like. Me: I think I’ll try it. [manages most of it except for the two high Fs] Also me: Ow my voice. Guess I’m skipping that bit of the beginning. I can manage the high Es but the F is…not good.

This was great! Thaller is in a lot of Science channel space series and I love her. But god, do I ever wish she’d do something about her hair. Which is incredibly shallow of me and the fact that her hair looks bad does subvert the way women are expected to look on television.

Train ticket is bought so anytime before the 7th or after the 16th (I’m gonna be there for my birthday!). I’ll be in the cute little city of Roanoke. Mountains! Trees and bushes that look right to me! (I lived in VA from the ages of 3 to 12, but in Tidewater, not the mountains).

Not only are these wildfires terrible because they kill flora, fauna, and humans, but they cause rockfalls as well, and things that get burnt include telecom infrastructure, which is a major problem in mountains with limited roads

I'm about 60% through it--I'm savoring it--and I am loving the harpy bits. And it is *such* a Marissa book, I can hear her voice so clearly as I read it, which I love (nota bene: we've been friends for ~25 years, so I'm definitely biased here).

I agree that a culture shift is needed. Smaller conventions do a lot better at accessibility, but not always. I do think it's easier for smaller cons to be better at it because it's often the same people running it every year, so there is continuity. And they're more likely to listen to folks.

Yeah, I figured that would be the case. And the way the Business Meeting is some people's fandom makes for what is, IMO, an unhealthy dynamic between people who want genuine change and people who don't want their fandom to change & deploy procedural rules to ensure it.
