This probably would be stronger if we got to see Yukiko leave Inaba and have to more directly deal with it not automatically fixing her problems but there are naturally compromises made with persona games taking place over one year in a single location.

I think Yukiko is much like Rise where you can uncharitably say "nothing changed" but imo what matters is how they got there. Rebelling against something forced on you only to later find out you like it for your own reasons is relatable to me.

As a final note, some people criticize Rise for being obsessed with the MC. Personally, I'd argue her forwardness is incredibly charming and actually gives her more agency as a romantic option than most. Is it a power fantasy? Of course, it's fucking Persona. The entire premise is a power fantasy

This seems to lead to some people having the opinion that "tofu Rise" was more interesting. To each their own but I find that to be a sad outlook as it ignores a good story of rediscovering your passion. It is also again rejecting a character because they don't follow your ideals.

However the player's own judgement will impact how they view her story after this point. If you believe that the idol industry is innately evil then you will take issue with Rise learning to love her work again. If you think sexualization is bad you probably won't enjoy Rise's flirtatious nature.

In accepting her shadow, Rise accepts there is no real self out there she has lost. The pure idol is Rise. The mopy girl is Rise. The sex object is Rise. Whether any of these personas is morally good or bad isn't really the concern of the story inside or out of the game.

This is honestly P4's strongest narrative beat with the shadows in my view. And the acceptance of her shadow is not "this sexualized image of me is bad but it's part of me". In fact no shadow is purely "bad", but rather aspects the characters believe don't fit with who they think they should be.

This obviously gives birth to Shadow Rise's appearance as a "vapid" stripper. Though the stripping is important itself as it represents Rise's desire for people to see her true self as she "bares it all". The issue of course being that there is no real Rise. Or Teddie. Or anyone for that matter.

She believes no one sees her as a real person, but the problem is she herself doesn't know where Risette begins and ends. In an attempt to sever herself from her idol persona, she suppresses her sexuality completely as she sees it as incompatible with being a real person.

Looking at P4 alone, the game is much more concerned with a character's *feelings* rather than making definitive moral judgements. Rise as a character is burnt out by having her identity fully overtaken by a corporate image that yes, is heavily sold as a sexual object.

I think it's fairly natural to take Rise's arc as a criticism of the idol industry and sexualization of (particularly young) women. However, I'd suggest that P4 isn't actually taking a strong stance one way or another. In fact, thinking it condemns these things makes it difficult to understand Rise

However, I do believe a lot of less favorable takes from the fandom are the result of preconceived opinions on what the characters*should* be. This creates dissatisfaction when the "true self" of the character does not match their headcanon. Ironically this may make it Atlus' greatest artwork

I don't share my thoughts on media much but excuse me for a moment. Persona 4 shadows have a lot of thought and symbolism put into them. Some of which are much more clear cut than others. Naturally this leaves them open to some interpretation or "discourse" which can be both good and bad.
