Isn't it so unutterably bizzar that I am looking out of these eyes and not another's, there is simply no reason for it.

The return of the jedi wasn't written with a prequel in mind, they're two completely different universes. I just don't think there's any point trying to follow a narrative thread back in time from one to the other

Certainly agree with you there, people just really like farmers for some reason, their PR is incredible. Personally I think its a side effect of supermarket advertising, 'British beef' 'local potatos' and all that. Maybe also the distribution of seats to rural areas with lop pop - a magnified impact

There are two kinds of environmental activist: The local activist concerned with plants/animals ect, in one partcular place and the global activist concerned with climate change These people are often in conflict. To fix the world it is necessary to find a compromise between the two points of veiw

So here's a provocative opinion: why do we care so much about protecting local farmers? What if we treated it as a business like any other and let non competetive operations go under?

Look I know you're just trying to wind me up, but I feel like this is missing the point - where does flat earth conspiracy fit into where we should / shouldn't build solar panels?
000
eightroundsrapid.bsky.social @eightroundsrapid.bsky.social · 20/12/2025
That's a good one, i've changed my mind, let's never build another solar panel on virgin land ever again.

One of the main reasons China is so sucsessfull in the green energy transition, where others are failing, is because they are unafraid to build out industry. Not every plant is sacred, ugly solar farms mean cheap clean electricity. This is a good thing.

Some times you've got to destroy a habitat to make room for new infrastructure - give it a few years some of the foliage will have grown back and it'll look much nicer.

This misses that you have to pay human drivers, but driveress cars take no wage - also every taxi service, traditional or otherwise, has to shut down when noone needs a ride, its not a new problem for self driveing vehicles

Btw i'm not saying the Turing test has or has not been passed, I'm saying you can make a good argument both ways and that makes the test 'fluffy'

I can't believe you're saying people that grade university level course work don't care if all their students are cheating - there's pleaty of angst about it out there (www.economist.com/podcasts/202...) - reasonble people with good domain knowledge are worried because the problem is hard.

I wonder what counts as sceptical enough? University lecturers struggle to distinguish AI generated coursework from things written by their students - clear incentive to distinguish one from the other and as much skepticism as could be wished for - would you consider that a pass or not?

Isn't the Turing test passed by just proving that a group of people can't distinguish between a machine and another person? Its a criteria fluffy enough that it can reasonably be claimed simple chat bots from the 2000s have passed it and at the same time that the latest LLMs have not.

Where is this from - its a bit blurry but is it suggesting there is some fixed casualty limit that, once breached, will cause the Ukrainians to give up? Also if that plot is showing cumulative casualties over time why does it rise and fall? Would love more about how that model is put together

Europe must also reduce what we give the Russians in hydrocarbon revenue. How can we justify spending all this money on Ukraine when we give just as much to Russia though oil and gas sales - we've got to commit to defeating Russia - cutting energy ties now will shorten the war and ultimately save $

The Russian invasion of Ukraine was not anticipated. All through the coldwar it was widely belived that the soviets would attack but it never happened. I can't from the top of my head think of a conflict between peer adversaries that just went off on schedule. Maybe I'm wrong

I've seen a number of public figures state that they think the next war - China vs tiwan, Russia vs Europe, some BS thing going down in america - will happen in the next 3-5 years. But I wonder how many wars have there been when the onset of hostilities was widely known before hand?
