Just thinking about these two stories next to each other: 1. In Darndale Park, a football club and a parkrun have been displaced by horses, and some locals have been asking for stables. Nothing yet. 2. In D2, the council is spending €7.5m on a new tearoom in Merrion Square, an area short of cafes?
dublininquirer.com
What to do with the horses of Darndale?
Grazing in public parks means other uses are being pushed out, and adding momentum to calls for an equine centre and stable club to properly support horse culture in the area.

Would you like to be a Legal Observer? Our next training is on Thurs 15 Oct in Galway, 6pm-9pm. We'll cover everything you need to know including the role, responsibilities and the relevant criminal law on the right to protest and public order. @illanwall.bsky.social @emilywilliams19.bsky.social

"Become a Legal Observer
Training session in Galway City
Thursday 15 October, 6pm-9pm
For more info, see iccl.ie"Image featuring text:

"What is a legal observer?
Legal observers are trained to monitor, document and film the policing of protests to ensure that gardaí are operating within the law.

Legal observers are independent and do not take part in the protest. They focus on the rights of those involved, rather than the issue that is being protested.

They’re also recognised human rights defenders by the United Nations, meaning there is an obligation to permit legal observers to fulfil their role unhindered under international law."Image featuring text:

"Who can be a legal observer?

Anyone who is interested in becoming a legal observer, attends one of our trainings, and upholds the terms of participation joins the Irish Network of Legal Observers.

The training takes place in-person and is about three hours long. Participants learn about the role, their responsibilities and the relevant criminal law concerning the right to protest and public order.

The Irish Network of Legal Observers does not support groups that infringe on or undermine the rights of others."Image featuring text:

"Interested?

To sign up for our next training in Galway on Thursday 15 October, contact Emily Williams on: emily.williams@iccl.ie.

If you’re interested in becoming a legal observer, but can’t attend our next training, don’t worry. We hold regular trainings around the country and advertise them on our website and social media channels.

To learn more about the Irish Network of Legal Observers (an initiative led by ICCL and Dr Illan rua Wall of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, University of Galway), visit iccl.ie."

I understand the idea behind the return to the oral exam, but they are notoriously subjective and tend to have the usual biases (towards assertive white men). Moreover, with larger classes, this not only takes a lot of time, it will also become even less reliable.

As it is the week of the Nobel prizes and also the week of the Budget here, I thought it worth flagging the pretty pathetic record of the Irish state in supporting academic research (in case you can't see, Ireland is at the bottom between Chile and Cost Rica).
