If you are interested in any kind of writing, I strongly recommend the Pt. Townsend Writers' Conference. Even if all you do is sit and look at the water, you'll be inspired (but you'll be at workshops and craft talks and readings, too).

New post on Unprofessoring. Is there really "No Other Choice" or are we giving in to "narratives of inevitability"? Thanks to a post by @docfreeride.bsky.social for the framing.

Reading an illustrated version of “On Tyranny” in advance of @timothysnyder.bsky.social ‘s talk in Portland tonight, as the richest army in the world races through my city terrorizing people under the guise of border control. Feeling sick to my stomach.
Drawing of a log cabin with men crawling out of the grown and running with guns. The title reads “Be wary of paramilitaries.” The text reads “When the men with guns who have always claimed to be against the system start wearing uniforms and marching with torches and pictures of a leader, the end is nigh. When the pro-leader paramilitary and the official police and military intermingle, the end has come.”

I changed my course content from the published description and from the syllabus almost every year in response to new data, political changes, my own education. This is *exactly* about academic freedom. #academicsky

Last night, I watched the haunting “I’m Still Here”, a 2024 Brazilian movie about forced disappearances of dissidents during the 1970s military dictatorship. I was struck by this piece of dialog. Eunice, a woman whose husband was taken, has been fighting to get the government to admit he was dead:
Reporter: how did you deal with the void left by your husband?
Eunice: forced disappearances were one of the regimes cruelest acts. You kill one person, but condemn all the rest to eternal psychological torture.
