Just heard from Mom & sister is out of her surgery, which went well. And even when you figured it would probably be fine (this was planned, she's otherwise in good health, etc), that's still such a relief. Idk, I just do that oldest daughter thing of constantly worrying about everyone.

That looks like it's going to be so dry and flavorless

Fortunately most of episode 1 does take place in daytime but the night scene that should be so important between Adam and Charles is so poorly lit.

Football is so comfortable with sexual violence that I just gave up watching it. The sexual abuse scandal at Baylor while I was finishing my PhD really soured it all and the NFL is terrible about it.

Giving the new East of Eden series a try and OF COURSE the night scenes are so dark one can scarcely discern anything that's happening.

It's maybe on the cusp between middle grade and YA but The Many Assassinations of Samir, the Seller of Dreams by Daniel Nayeri is a delight. One to keep in your pocket for when your kid is ready, at the least.

We also painted her office at the church so that it's a nicer space for her to return to once she recovers. Didn't have time to hang the art, but as she said, now she feels motivated to do it because it will all look more vibrant. I've had more fun breaks, but this one felt useful.

Coming back from spending fall break in New England, though rather than being a tourist trip, I was helping my sister prep for surgery & didn't take a lot of pretty pictures. But we did have a couple nice walks and I squeezed in a beautiful run (plus lots of coffee, bookstore & gallery breaks).

The text of the article is great too
Everything you've heard about Michigan's U.S. Senate race is true: An extremist is asking voters to send him to Washington, masking an agenda far out of step with Michigan's mainstream under the pretense of normalcy. If elected, this man would urge America down a dark path, changing the shape of our nation, perhaps irrevocably.

But that man is not Abdul El-Sayed.

It's not an ad, but the Detroit Free Press ran their endorsement with a huge headline that said "WE CAN'T SEND AN EXTREMIST TO THE SENATE: that's why we're endorsing Abdul El-Sayed, not Mike Rogers"

My only desires for the wild card games are for the Cubs to beat the Padres, but especially for the White Sox to beat the Astros. Look, in addition to undying enmity for the Astros, I just want to see Munetaka Murakami be incredibly drunk and joyful about his team advancing again.

Me when a human being tells me they're training on something and may be slow/make a mistake: oh that's cool, I'm not in a rush! gotta learn sometime Me when an AI phone agent says they're learning and may make mistakes: CONNECT ME TO A HUMAN AND THEN GO TO HELL

AI can't let me back into my office when I lock myself out like the dizzy bitch I am Our admin does SO MANY THINGS, she cannot be automated out of existence. And I've never ever ever been tempted to yell at her, and I yelled at the Walmart AI agent today.

I'm home, I'm exhausted, but I have (I think?) survived my MONTH OF DEADLINES though apparently now I better immediately start turning this conference paper into an article because one of my friends pretty much shoved me and a journal editor together yesterday & went "you two need to talk"

E. A. Fredericks @efredericks.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Hahaha my sister was texting me through the first four innings and I was taking a nap so I did not respond, and finally she went "ARE YOU EVEN ALIVE?"

I have had very positive feedback to conference presentations before but honestly never like this one. Like I know we say "I enjoyed your paper" as easy small talk in this setting but I have had multiple long conversations with people about it today.

Never did get around to writing a conclusion for this presentation, but I winged it, it's done, and it went well! The post presentation BLT tastes so good.

I am so sorry, Phillies fans, I tuned into the game and as soon as I did, Brewers started hitting home runs off Nola. It's my fault. I just wanted some background baseball while I worked on my conference paper!

The LA Queens won the WPBL championship last night and the Dodgers beat the Padres, so my family group chat is feeling very cheery this morning.

...the extremely lackadaisical narrative structure is the least Victorian thing about these novels. It's just easy to imagine what they could be. Idk! I can't turn this part of my brain off easily. I do like them, but if Beth Brower really does write 25, I can see the bloom coming off the rose. 📚💙

Also finished Vol 3 of The Unselected Journals of Emma M Lion. First half really did have a narrative shape; second half not so much. Sense of voice and incident remain charming, it's great to listen to on a run, but... 📚💙

Finished Susan Choi's Flashlight a few days ago. Such an interesting look at loss & memory, and no small trick to write characters who are irritating in such human ways (not as plot contrivance) while also being so heartbreaking. 📚💙

Full confession: I ordered this like 2 years ago and only got around to reading it because I suggested it for our Short Story September meeting and it won the poll. But hey! I didn't have to wait for my copy to ship.

Tramp Press is an indie Irish publisher so your best bet for getting this book is ordering it from Blackwell's (free international shipping!) if you don't want to wait almost a month.

The first couple were more work to get through, but pretty quickly things get very fun. Fennell makes sure to include a good number of female authors (my girl Dorothy Macardle makes it in), and also translated the last 3 stories from Irish. 📚💙
