His colour palette has always intrigued me: When I first saw his paintings I thought there was something wrong with his eyes or paints, but when I saw this work by his teacher Esaias van de Velde (Het Pontveer) I realised it is the result of a very good grasp of the interplay of light and colour.

I cannot recommend Amitav Ghosh’s Smoke and Ashes enough. Although it spans more centuries, it is sn eye opener for American’s role in the 19th century opium trade.

Painted 17 years after the English, the French and two German Prince Bishops ganged up and ransacked the countryside of the Republic. Much of the wealth that underpinned the artists of the Dutch Golden Age had disappeared. For the Dutch this painting stands for the landscape that has disappeared.

It is an alien concept to many people. We glorify the heroism of the World Wars, but don’t remember the shortages. I also find ‘resilience’ translates poorly to other languages (Widerstandsfähigkeit, weerstandsvermogen): It just doesn’t ring stockpiling, people looking after each other, mitigation..

It reminds me of a psychologist working for the same company as me who told me he was smarter than me because our company recruited from the 1% best psychologists vs the 10% best from engineering degrees. To which I replied that assessment clearly didn’t included statistical skills.

This Honthorst painting was one exhibited at the special Honthorst exhibition in Utrecht. This painting and the Lute Player by Caravaggio were owned in the early 17th century by Cardinal del Monte. One clear impression is that you feel music is being made, whereas Caravaggio’s Lute Player 1/2

I was taught: Red on yellow, nasty fellow. Red on black, all right is jack, but more importantly: 1)if you close enough to work out the order then you are too close for safety 2) color permutations happen 3) Often it is too dark, the snake is too muddy anyway.

The blue colours indicate an increase in the radar backscatter measured by the satellite, whereas the red colours indicate a reduction in backscatter.

Every September, I test my 2021 statistical prediction against summer temperatures at De Bilt. Since 1976, the station shows a tight trend of +0.034°C/year. In terms of equivalent geographical displacement, the Dutch summer has effectively migrated south to Central France over this period. 🇳🇱➡️🇫🇷 #KNMI

Excellent overview and incredibly what you’ve achieved in such a short timeframe. To understand potential risks areas that may cause further hazards I created this image using before and after Sentinel-1 data not suffering from cloud cover limitations. Let me know if you want to know more!

This comparison of today's Sentinel-1 satellite data with data recorded before the dramatic Tibet-Nepal flood shows the changes in the likely source area. In the coming days, we can expect InSAR-based estimates of the volumes of displaced rock and ice.
The image shows changes to Sentinel-1 scattered data across the source area of the devastating Tibet-Nepal flood.

Sulla was at least an inspiration for the Italian fascist, but as for many things that they believed their historic interpretations have been found wanting: maybe a lesson for the wannabe fascist historian apologists.

It does you credit that you emphasise with the people who work there, but I worry that the general public safety will be compromised when difficult calls will need to be on evacuation for eruptions or developments in areas with geohazards…

The report states oil was found inside a Belemnite. I normally predict a thimbleful, but a Belemnite full means an awful lot of Belemnites need to be found to meet the 13 billion-barrel bonanza. Here is the background info: geoexpro.com/hydrocarbon-... www.londonstockexchange.com/news-article...

The modus operandi is often: plug a completely wild guess on reserves in place, sucker in a company to farm-in at the cost of an exploration well, find a smidgen of HC, sell company, retire.

The company 80 mile PLC that holds the license seems to be more a mining company. The companies that drilled a decade ago where focused on Baffin Bay. Apart from very disappointing geological results the cost were astronomical.

I suspect they billed themselves as ‘communication consultants.’ When the boss of a large company got fed up with them he sent out an ukase ‘no more consultants’, which the middle managers interpreted as all contractors, which included the people who did the actual work. Shows you the comms quality.

@channel4news.bsky.social I listened to it twice. He didn't use the words "It is very nuanced". Neither was he introduced as an "Energy expert." You did, however directly quote Greenpeace's incorrect assertion that Jackdaw would only deliver 27 jobs, a number wrong by several order of magnitudes.

Fantastic health benefits of "natural" trace elements in Himalayan salt, but don't worry about the bad trace elements. The natural wears off as the stuff is loaded in dirty dump trucks and then shipped in bulk halfway across the world. Do people think monks spoon it into little Lidl jars?

Waves scattered by a gradual ramp (e.g., saturation changes) show a frequency effect.[1] Exploits this for a supercritical CO2 plume in a thick sandstone reservoir. It is on my to-do list to apply this in a setting interesting to volcanologists using receiver functions. [1] tinyurl.com/yhffvfuc

Being able to show you descended from a Roman general was ‘de rigueur’. Through pope Pius II there was a big element of taking over the role of ‘defender of the faith’ once Constantinopel had fallen to the infidel Turks.
