It would be nice if they found a way to continue some stripes on the side at least, rather than leave it completely bare

I'm reading some 2010s Vancouver documents on underground infill station construction, and it's unfortunate that so much research doesn't look beyond the Anglosphere

@jedwinmok.com @chittimarco.bsky.social Glad to see Victoria, BC, looking internationally for inspiration from the... Brisbane "Metro" and trackless trams... oh... 🙃 www.bctransit.com/wp-content/u...
A page from the Draft Victoria Regional Transit Plan that lists "rapid transit" options as rapidbus, trackless trams, and rail transit.

Ultimately, cities like Vienna see more people choosing transit over driving because of deliberate choices to prioritize the sustainable movement of people, not vehicles. Vancouver has the same tools available, should it choose to act on its claim of being “the world’s greenest city.”
2024 Vienna modal share, with transit (and walking!) being more popular than personal vehicles.2024 Vancouver Transportation Survey results, showcasing a stagnant transit modal share.

Vienna’s tram line D is the first line to be accelerated since this motion was initiated in February. Improvements include adding TSP, but also turning restrictions from minor streets, and removing on-street parking. Such changes are also applicable to Vancouver’s 3rd busiest bus route, the 49.

While Vancouver drags its feet on improving four measly bus routes, a true world-class city, Vienna, is looking to speed up 29 tram lines and 135 bus routes, basically its entire surface transit network. The city will invest 2 million Euros annually until 2030 on transit acceleration measures.

Also, shoutout to Southbound Ioco Rd @ Suter Brook Way, a bus stop so close to Inlet Centre station that the passenger information display inside the bus has no time to show the name of the next stop, a SkyTrain station, before the bus passes it. Yes, it happened to me.

The data is getting a bit old (and I could improve a lot nowadays), but the same trends are present within Metro Vancouver.
A graph of average scheduled speed vs. average stop distance for buses within Metro Vancouver. Generally, buses with stops placed further apart are faster.A table listing Metro Vancouver bus routes, their average scheduled speed, and their average stop distance. Again, routes with smaller distances between stops tend to be slower.

Route 8 used to have twice as many trips during the busiest hours of the day. Longer wait times not only reduce the convenience of public transportation but also have very real impacts on people's lives (e.g., having to choose between arriving extra early or extra late to work/school).
A comparison of southbound trips on route 8 leaving Main Street-Science World Station from 2020 January and 2026 January.

When Seoul's courts sided with Yoon Byung-so, a widower who had lost his wife due to a platform incident, they set a precedent: If someone falls off a platform and loses their life due to a train, whether intentionally or not, the railway operator does bear some responsibility for their death.
From Seung's Substack post:

In 2012, @translink.ca released some analysis showing what characteristics are common to the most successful bus routes in Metro Vancouver. I applied that methodology for 2024, and many of the attributes still hold true.

I made a map of population density (CSDs) in BC overlaid with the highway network, the potential of intercity public transit is much stronger than you might expect! teito7000.github.io/projects/202...
A map of BC census subdivisions coloured by population density with provincial highways overlaid. Density rarely strays too far from the highway network (especially outside Metro Vancouver).

- Closing Line 2 for 4 years’ worth of upgrades while still keeping single-track portions, not adding electrification, and mandating two transfers from the airport to the city centre are all questionable decisions that will likely come back to haunt the line as it becomes more popular 9/10

- The curves near Hurdman station are really unpleasant. Lots of rail screeching at a painfully slow speed. Is this causing the bogie issues? IDK but it feels unnecessary, since the station could've been moved while extending the Transitway to meet it, rather than forcing the sharp curves 8/10

The Ugly 💀 - Despite being only 5 years old, the O-Train is out of service fairly regularly for maintenance befitting a much older system. Beyond scheduled outages, I had the misfortune of being on the train when something went wrong in the eastern end, forcing a shuttle service 7/10

- There are no LCD screens despite these trains being pretty new. The gangway LED screens that are present are obstructed by horizontal grab bars 🙃 - The transverse seating reduces standing space and creates bottlenecks for passenger flow, a problem for one of NA's highest ridership LRTs 5/10

The Bad 🫠 - Fares are pretty expensive, and not distance-based, likely dissuading short, urban trips - Fare gates are slow to open, compared to Vancouver ⏳ - Wayfinding inside the trains is lacking. Most of the panel space is empty, with paper maps irregularly scattered 4/10

The Good 😀 - The stations are stunning, both architecturally and by how well they integrate into the downtown streetscape (yay for public art!) - The downtown tunnel segment feels like a true metro, with frequent service (pre-service cuts 😭) and protection from the elements in chilly Ottawa 2/10
