Eye movements are cheap, right? Not necessarily! 💰 In our review just out in @natrevpsychol.nature.com, Alex Schütz and I discuss the different costs associated with making an eye movement, how these costs affect behaviour, and the challenges of measuring this… rdcu.be/eAm69 #visionscience #vision

I have a question - I am happy to buy a license for the lab, but do I need to buy a license for each of my lab members for personal devices (that we use for debugging etc)? This adds up to a lot of computers once we have multiple devices each (home and office), plus transient students!

I agree in theory, but it may disproportionately disadvantage “non-famous” researchers who aren’t invited to review in the first place. More famous or prestigious labs would bank more publishing credits easily, and smaller labs might struggle to get any…

Very sad to hear about the passing of Eileen Kowler, a true giant in the field of eye movements & their interaction with vision & cognitive processes. She helped me as a grad student & it was always wonderful to talk to her. Her body of work is foundational to our field. Thank you, Eileen.

Using a simple optical flow model, we can use geometrical regularities in objects to predict qualitatively distinct viewpoints. This works for familiar, symmetrical, novel, & asymmetrical objects! We can even predict where people will perceive the front to be on novel, meaningless objects!!

How can we decide which viewpoints of an object are qualitatively special? How do we know where the front is, for objects we've never seen before? In our new paper we provide a quantiative account of why some object viewpoints are qualitatively special. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/...

When I took a job in the UK, I didn’t account for the govt hostility to foreigners. Rent a flat with my German husband co-listed = impossible until we pay 1000s for family visa. Rent alone & list his 🇩🇪 salary as income = impossible (non UK income). Renting alone = impossible (my salary too low). 🫠

I’ve had problems with cakes not really ‘setting’ so they end up being both burned and raw at the same time- for recipes that are completely foolproof when I’ve done them in Aus! Also pretty sure it’s not just me because I’m (usually) a very good cook…😆
