The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating the Providence Public School District (PPSD) over claims that its student loan repayment program discriminates against white teachers.The investigation is looking into whether the district’s Educator of Color Loan Forgiveness Program violates federal anti-discrimination laws. The program, launched in 2021 with a $3.1 million grant from the Rhode Island Foundation, was created to increase diversity in the district’s teaching staff. It offers up to $25,000 in student loan forgiveness over three years to new hires who identify as Black, Asian, Indigenous, Latino, or multiracial. The goal was to recruit more than 125 minority teachers within five years.The DOJ is reviewing whether this hiring incentive unfairly excludes certain teachers based on race.
