Reporting from the White House

After just a few minutes, Trump has moved on from his war in Iran to the curtains he’s picked out for the White House and his new ballroom. “I picked those drapes in my first term,” he says. “I always liked gold.” There’s light chuckling in the room.

Trump, in the middle of a Medal of Honor ceremony where he is explaining his rationale on deposing Iran’s supreme leader, starts talking about his White House ballroom project.

I really love living in a city that plows the river path a day after a snow storm #a2council

“We stepped up our support for them and our entire international community through frequent email updates, online webinars and one-on-one advising.”
Screenshot of email to university of Michigan staff and students. Entire text reads:

“Students, faculty and staff:

The world’s brightest minds have long come to teach, study and research at the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine. These individuals bring exceptional knowledge to our classrooms and laboratories, add a global perspective to our campus and enrich our community in countless ways. Our commitment to them – and to all members of our community – remains unwavering.

The university has 7,704 enrolled international students and an additional 2,497 recent international graduates who have remained in the country legally for professional training and experience. We stepped up our support for them and our entire international community through frequent email updates, online webinars and one-on-one advising. Last month, we began hearing reports of student visas being terminated at other universities and we immediately increased our review of the government’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which tracks the status of student visas.”

We have this cool year of democracy we’re doing here (classes, talks, community and student events). I wish we’d turn the volume up to 11 on it.

It’s cool the Russian bot accounts will tell him whether to eliminate social security.

Jack gives us the reason why decentralized protocols are attractive to SV folks:
Screenshot of a quote from the linked article. The quote is:

"Bluesky had a lot of great ideas. And they're ideas I believe in. I think the internet needs a decentralized protocol for social media. I think Elon needs it. I think X needs it. I think it removes liability for the company, to separate those layers."

Live footage of the chaos on the University of Michigan campus that Congress is so interested in. Frisbees and hammocks everywhere.

Harman Kaur has a cool new experiment out about ML practitioners and interpretability tools. She finds that while they're intended to help, they can impair understanding. Practitioners spent 5x less time on task, and were 17% less accurate with access to them. eegilbert.org/papers/kaur-...

I'm generally excited to read scholarship on online dating—but I'm especially excited to read Apryl Williams's new book, *Not My Type*. I remember that talk by OkCupid's Christian Rudder described in the Intro (excerpted below): www.sup.org/books/extra/...
Cover of the book. Title is "Not My Type"; subtitle is "Automating Sexual Racism in Online Dating." There are 3 profile pictures at the bottom.

Last week, we organized a CCC/CRA visioning workshop on "The Future of Research on Social Technologies." It was all discussion, no panels. CRA paid for a graphic recorder too, (!) who drew meeting topics and highlights in real time on giant pieces of paper, and now I want one all the time.

This doesn’t really capture it, but I appreciate Ann Arbor’s city planners so much in the Fall. My daily commute looks like this right now.
Bike handlebars are in the foreground. A trail runs away from the bike, and there are trees with yellow leaves in the background.
