On This Day in Trumpery: October 15, 2024 Interview at the Economic Club of Chicago
On October 15, 2024, Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait interviewed Donald Trump at the Economic Club of Chicago.

The rambling discourse lasted over an hour, and in addition to numerous, verifiable falsehoods, Trump made the following controversial statements:

(Regarding the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol Building) “The primary scene in Washington was hundreds of thousands, the largest group of people I've ever spoken before … And some people went to the Capitol, and a lot of strange things happened there, a lot of strange things with people being waved into the Capitol by police, with people screaming, go in with -- that never got into trouble.”

(Regarding Vladimir Putin) “Russia has never had a president that they respect so much. But more importantly or less importantly, I guess, I went into Russia, and people said, ‘Oh, he likes Putin, and Putin likes him.’"

(Regarding immigrants entering the US under Biden) “…180 countries, people came in. They came from prisons and jails. They came from mental institutions and insane asylums, a step above. They came from the terrorists.”

On This Day in Trumpery: October 14 Fiona Hill's Testimony
On October 14, 2019, Dr. Fiona Hill testified at a closed-door deposition before the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight committees. She appeared after being subpoenaed by the House impeachment inquiry into solicitation of foreign interference in an election by Donald Trump.

Dr. Hill had served as the Senior Director for Europe and Russia on President Trump’s National Security Council before resigning in July 2019.

Key points from Dr. Hill’s testimony included—

*Suspicious behavior by Rudy Giuliani and Ambassador Gordon Sondland, in which they seemed to be running their own Ukraine policy at Trump’s direction instead of the National Security Council’s

*The unwarranted firing of U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, based on a smear campaign set in motion by Giuliani

In 2021, during an interview with NPR, Dr. Hill expressed concern about Russian President Vladimir Putin manipulating President Trump, saying, "Trump himself was a massive counterintelligence risk, because of his vulnerabilities and the fragility of his ego."

On This Day in Trumpery: October 13 A Broken Deal
On October 13, 2017, Donald Trump announced the US would no longer certify Iran’s compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The JCPOA came from extensive negotiations between Iran, the US, China, France, Germany, the EU, the UK, and Russia, and was finalized in July 2015. The agreement restricted Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

Per President Trump, the JCPOA was one of “the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into.” Criticisms included the temporary nature of the deal and its failure to address ballistic missiles.

In a 2017 statement organized by the Arms Control Association, more than 80 nonproliferation experts affirmed that the JCPOA “has proven to be an effective and verifiable arrangement that is a net plus…”

The US withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018, reimposing sanctions on Iran and entities doing business with the country. The administration had imposed more than 1,500 sanctions by the end of Trump’s first term.

On January 5, 2020, Iran announced that it would no longer abide by the deal’s operational limits, and declared in October 2025 that the deal was terminated.

In April 2026, after weeks of attacks on Iran by US and Israeli forces, Trump posted on Truth Social that “The DEAL that we are making with Iran will be FAR BETTER than the JCPOA.”

On This Day in Trumpery: October 12 Sexual Misconduct
On October 12, 2022, Donald Trump posted a lengthy statement about writer E. Jean Carroll on Truth Social, calling her accusations against him “a complete con job.”
In May 2023, a New York jury found Trump liable for defaming Carroll with his 2022 post and for sexually abusing her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store in 1996. Because Trump was not president when he posted on Truth Social or when he assaulted Carroll, presidential immunity did not apply. In July 2026, Carroll received $5.6 million in damages.
In 2024, a separate jury awarded Carroll an additional $83.3 million for defamatory statements from 2019. Appeals are ongoing.
Carroll’s cases are part of a larger pattern of sexual violence accusations involving Trump. In 2024, The Guardian listed 24 women who had publicly come forward with accusations that include sexual assault, kissing and groping without consent, looking under women’s skirts, and walking in on naked pageant contestants.
President Trump has denied all of the allegations.

On This Day in Trumpery: October 11 War with the Press
Image: Microphones (Public Domain)
On October 11, 2017, President Trump tweeted, "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?”

The tweet came after NBC News reported that Trump had allegedly expressed a desire to increase the US nuclear arsenal almost tenfold. Trump and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis denied the claim.

Trump has continued to pressure the media in ensuing years.
In 2025—
A GOP-led Congress cut $1.1 billion in funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
Trump appointee Kari Lake laid off hundreds of staffers at the Voice of America, though the layoffs were later found to be void.
David Ellison’s company Skydance gained control over CBS after merging with parent company Paramount.

On October 6, 2026, Paramount Skydance acquired Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN.

Days later, the DOJ confirmed it was investigating NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, and Fox News for possible antitrust violations. In September, the outlets declined to provide pool coverage after the White House barred CNN, MS NOW and Politico.

On This Day in Trumpery: October 10 Trump EPA Dismisses Experts
Image: (smog), Photo by Elina Araja, Public Domain
On October 10, 2018, news emerged that acting EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler had disbanded the Particulate Matter Review panel. The panel was composed of independent experts who provided guidance during air quality standard reviews.

Of particular concern was the PM2.5 standard, which limits the quantity of particulate matter that is 2.5 micrometers or smaller (about 30 times thinner than a human hair). PM2.5 has been linked to numerous health problems, including cardiovascular disease and premature death. Exposure is also associated with higher infant mortality rates.

Per the World Health Organization at that time, PM2.5 levels should not be higher than an annual mean of 10 micrograms per cubic meter of air. The Trump EPA retained the existing standard of 12 µg/m3, even though dismissed panel members reported that the standard did not protect public health.

The Biden EPA reinstated an expert panel in 2021, and a stricter PM2.5 standard of 9 µg/m3 was enacted in 2024. In 2025, Trump’s EPA attempted to have the new standard vacated, but it was upheld by the D.C. Circuit.

On This Day in Trumpery: October 9 Brennan Center Reacts to NSPM-7
Image: Trump with Executive Order (Public Domain)
On October 9, 2025, the nonprofit law and public policy institute Brennan Center for Justice published a report in response to the Trump administration’s executive order “Designating Antifa as a Terrorist Organization” and the National Security Presidential Memorandum-7 (NSPM-7) issued in September 2025.

Critics argue that the directives are part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to crack down on opposition. NSPM-7 describes itself as a “comprehensive strategy” to investigate, prosecute, and disrupt “entities and individuals engaged in acts of political violence and intimidation” animated by common threads including “anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity…”

The Brennan Center’s analysis “Trump’s Orders Targeting Anti-Fascism Aim to Criminalize Opposition” concludes that both the executive order and NSPM-7 are “ungrounded in fact and law.” It also argues that the administration has no authority to designate domestic groups as terrorist organizations.

On This Day in Trumpery: October 8 A Plot to Kidnap a Governor
On October 8, 2020, the FBI announced that 13 men had been arrested for plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in response to strict COVID measures enacted in the state.
Image: Gretchen Whitmer (Public Domain)
The conspiracy took shape in mid-2020 after leaders Adam Fox and Barry Croft met through militia networks. The plot included trying Whitmer for “treason.”

Defense attorneys for Fox and Croft argued that the men were entrapped, though a jury ultimately rejected the claim.

While Donald Trump has not been linked to the plot, critics accuse Trump of inflammatory rhetoric that emboldened militia members. The day after armed protesters entered the Michigan State Capitol in April 2020, Trump tweeted that the protesters were “very good people” and urged Whitmer to “make a deal” with them.

During a presidential debate on September 29, 2020, Trump refused to condemn white supremacists, saying, "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by... somebody's got to do something about Antifa and the left."

In May 2025, Trump stated he was considering pardoning Fox and Croft, though no pardon has been reported.

On This Day in Trumpery: October 7 The Access Hollywood Tape
On October 7, 2016, The Washington Post released the now-infamous Access Hollywood tape. The tape captures a behind-the-scenes conversation between Donald Trump and co-host Billy Bush on a bus to the Days of Our Lives set in September 2005.

In the recording, on spotting actress Arianne Zucker, Trump commented, “I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything … Grab ‘em by the pussy…”

After the tape was leaked to a reporter, the Post verified its authenticity with NBC, owner of Access Hollywood, before releasing it.

On This Day in Trumpery: October 6 An Ally Betrayed
On Oct. 6, 2019, after a phone call between President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Trump announced that U.S. troops would be withdrawn from the border region between Turkey and Syria.

In the following weeks, a greater drawdown occurred, allowing Turkish forces to conduct Operation Peace Spring against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Image: ISIS Flag (Public Domain)
The SDF, a major partner of the U.S. in combating the Islamic State group ISIS, had done the majority of ground fighting against the jihadist organization. Many saw the withdrawal as a betrayal of the Kurdish allies by the US.

As a result of Turkey's incursion, hundreds of SDF fighters and civilians were killed, more than 180,000 people were displaced and over 700 ISIS prisoners escaped from the Ayn Issa detention camp.
Following the upheaval, Trump kept a reduced force in eastern Syria "only for the oil."

On This Day in Trumpery: October 5 Papadopoulos Pleads Guilty
On October 5, 2017, George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI regarding contacts with Russian Nationals while working as a foreign policy adviser on Donald Trump’s campaign.
Papadopoulos was in contact with Professor Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese academic with alleged ties to Russian intelligence. In April 2016, Mifsud told Papadopoulos that the Russians had “dirt” on Hillary Clinton in the form of thousands of emails.

Papadopoulos admitted to making “material omissions” regarding attempts to arrange meetings between Trump campaign members and Russian officials. Papadopolous was sentenced to 14 days in federal prison and then 12 months on supervised release.

Following Papadopoulos’ guilty plea, Trump described him as a “low level volunteer … already proven to be a liar,” and that few people on the campaign had heard about him. Trump pardoned Papadopoulos in December 2020.

Professor Mifsud has not been seen publicly since 2018.

On This Day in Trumpery: October 3, 2017 Hurricane Maria
On October 3, 2017, while visiting Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria, Donald Trump threw paper towel rolls into an assembled crowd during a stop at Guaynabo. Trump remarked that Puerto Rico had "thrown our budget a little out of whack” and contrasted Maria with "a real catastrophe like Katrina” at a briefing earlier that day.

As the storm had left much of the island without power, water, or communication, Trump’s actions were widely seen as insensitive. The initial death toll was 16, but studies by Harvard and George Washington University put the excess death toll due to the hurricane in the thousands. Trump claimed these figures were inflated by Democrats.

While response to the disaster was widely criticized as slow, AP analysis from 2025 found Trump's second-term approvals of disaster declarations across the US and its territories were slower than any presidents’ since 1989, with 70% taking at least a month.

This Day in Trumpery: October 2 "Secret Science"
On October 2, 2018, AP reported on the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed “Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science” rule, also known as the “Secret Science Rule”.

The Secret Science Rule directed the EPA to consider alternative dose-response models for certain hazards, instead of defaulting to the Linear No-Threshold model (LNT), in which there is no safe level for exposure.

Per reporting from The Nation, the “secret science” concept traces its roots to 1990s tobacco industry strategists, including Steve Milloy, as an effort to fight health regulations.

In April 2018, Milloy was invited to then-EPA head Scott Pruitt’s announcement of the rule. Milloy praised the rule for ending science that had “put companies out of business”. The rule was vacated in 2021.

Initial AP reporting had suggested the EPA would loosen radiation restrictions. The EPA objected that the rule did not address radiation, and AP issued a correction the following day.
Image: Radioactive Symbol
In May 2025, President Trump’s Executive Order 14300 instructed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to reconsider its use of the LNT dosage model. The comment period for the NRC’s proposed changes ended on August 31, 2026.

On October 1, 2017, President Trump tweeted that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was “wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The previous day Tillerson had met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing to discuss the North Korean nuclear missile crisis, and Tillerson stated that lines of communication with Pyongyang had been established.

Due to friction between Tillerson and Trump, it wasn’t clear if Trump’s tweet was an effort to play “good cop, bad cop,” or to publicly humiliate Tillerson.

Trump’s attitude towards Kim had changed by September 2018. At a rally in West Virginia, Trump stated, "… we would go back and forth. And then we fell in love…" According to Trump, Kim had written beautiful letters to him.

This Day in Trumpery: September 30, 2019 Government Shutdown and the Border Wall
September 30, 2019 marked the end of the 2019 fiscal year—the period of dispute for the 2018 – 2019 US government partial shutdown.

The original funding bill failed when Senate Democrats would not agree to appropriate $5.7 billion for the border wall between the US and Mexico. Trump initially claimed to be “flexible”, but then declared he would not sign any bill that did not include it.

The government was shut down from December 22 to January 25, 2019. About 800,000 government employees were furloughed or worked without pay.

A bill to fund the government through the fiscal year was finally passed, but included only $1.375 billion for the border wall.

Although Trump signed the bill on February 15, 2019, he then declared a national emergency in an attempt to divert $6.7 billion for the wall from other sources.

On This Day in Trumpery: September 29, 2026 Dealings with Fidel Castro's Cuba
Image: Fidel Castro (Public Domain)
On September 29, 2016, Newsweek published an investigative report on alleged violations of the US Cuba embargo by Donald Trump’s company Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts in 1998.

According to the report, at least $68,000 was spent to send consultants to Cuba to pursue business opportunities. Doing business with Fidel Castro’s regime without a treasury license was a violation of federal law at the time, so the money was funneled through a US consulting firm. The funds were then structured to look like charitable activity.

The reported activities contrast with Trump’s sharp criticism of Barack Obama’s Cuba policy, the Presidential Policy Directive on United States-Cuba Normalization. In 2017, Trump vowed to roll back Obama’s "terrible and misguided deal".

On This Day in Trumpery: September 27 Trump and the IRS
On September 27, 2020, the New York Times published a report revealing details of Donald Trump’s income tax history. Revelations from the report include:
Trump paid no income tax in 11 of the 18 years examined due to “business losses”.
In both 2016 and 2017, Trump paid only $750 in income taxes.
Trump’s tax bill was reduced by large consulting fees charged by Ivanka Trump.

In 2026, Trump sued the Internal Revenue Service. The Department of Justice, headed by Acting Attorney General (and former defense lawyer for Donald Trump) Todd Blanche, represented the IRS and settled out of court.

Terms of the settlement include creation of a 1.776 billion dollar, taxpayer-backed “Anti-Weaponization Fund” for individuals claiming they were targeted by the Biden administration’s DOJ.

A contested addendum protects the Trump family and associated enterprises from audits.

This day in Trumpery: September 22 Oval Office warns against acetaminophen.
On September 22, 2025, President Trump and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made an oval office announcement that Tylenol can be “associated with a very increased risk of autism”, followed by advice that pregnant women should only use the medication if they “can’t tough it out”.

The announcement was based on a review by Harvard researchers which found an associative link (not causation) between acetaminophen use by pregnant women and increased incidence of neurological disorders in newborns.

A much larger Swedish study funded by the National Institute of Neurological disorders and Stroke (NINDS) examined 2.5 million births and found no causal links when controlling for genetic factors.

Trump’s advice was deemed irresponsible given the threat to fetal development of high fevers in expectant mothers. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists continue to recommend acetaminophen as the safest first line analgesic.

In December 2024, a bipartisan House Ethics Committee Report concluded there was "substantial evidence" that Gaetz had sex with a 17-year-old in violation of Florida's statutory rape law, and engaged in a broader pattern of paying women for sex.
