for obvious reasons, returned to caitlin flanagan's excellent 2014 piece on frat houses and had forgotten how much this lede sings. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc...

One warm spring night in 2011, a young man named Travis Hughes stood on the back deck of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house at Marshall University, in West Virginia, and was struck by what seemed to him—under the influence of powerful inebriants, not least among them the clear ether of youth itself—to be an excellent idea: he would shove a bottle rocket up his ass and blast it into the sweet night air. And perhaps it was an excellent idea. What was not an excellent idea, however, was to misjudge the relative tightness of a 20-year-old sphincter and the propulsive reliability of a 20-cent bottle rocket. What followed ignition was not the bright report of a successful blastoff, but the muffled thud of fire in the hole.

Also on the deck, and also in the thrall of the night’s pleasures, was one Louis Helmburg III, an education major and ace benchwarmer for the Thundering Herd baseball team. His response to the proposed launch was the obvious one: he reportedly whipped out his cellphone to record it on video, which would turn out to be yet another of the night’s seemingly excellent but ultimately misguided ideas. When the bottle rocket exploded in Hughes’s rectum, Helmburg was seized by the kind of battlefield panic that has claimed brave men from outfits far more illustrious than even the Thundering Herd. Terrified, he staggered away from the human bomb and fell off the deck.

Auto-translated captions available on both, they seem fairly useful if you need them. #procycling

Fun video by Gabe "What On Earth Is This" about the peat-winning area near Breukelen NL which is now largely a sailing lake with a few roads across it, and ..... this. I have been there quite a few times, I used to row on the nearby canal and it's all connected. www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1_q...

I'm afraid in another 12 years we (I...) will have to take measures anyway; it's not really in a good spot for a giant chestnut.

About 12 years ago—we're not exactly sure anymore—my nephew put a small stick in the ground in the garden. It grew and this was the very first year it flowered and bore fruit.

One shiny horse chestnut on a placemat with an old map of Zeeland.

Weirdly, it wasn't listed on the "Music video controversies" page but I edited the song page to add that category at the bottom, so now it is: en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...

I still remember that her election campaign people had chosen When The Lady Smiles by Golden Earring as her walk-on music. A banging track, to be fair, but when you see the video you know they completely missed the point. Not sure if they actually used it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9-2...

Misschien omgekeerd, voor de lol. In elk geval niet rood en groen want dat is lastig te onderscheiden voor best veel mensen. Eerste 2 kleuren van zowel Excel als matplotlib zijn blauw (iets donkerder) en oranje.

Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

Also, despite my reaction during the live thread which was a bit over the top, I don't think it was too obvious here. I'm sure they didn't have to say one word about tactics, it was understood and everyone else understood too. Dutch TV: "And then IDT didn't chase." MvdP: "Yep, same bike <wry smile>"
