6 weeks after my son was born I went back to work for a bit before taking the rest of my parental leave. Even at that point, and with a baby that slept through the night more than most, I would periodically lose the ability to type.

Latin American racism has more vectors and parameters than ChatGPT!

Be fair, you can’t assume that. There’s always the possibility his ancestors were African slaves. Could also be indigenous people in his ancestry, but that’s more a central/South American thing. His ancestors and mine (PR) were more effective at genocide than mainland colonizers.

While I agree absolutely with this, I must admit every few months I encounter a super clever fraud scheme and think Damn! That guy earned his money (as long as they’re stealing from us, the giant bank, not ripping off senior citizens or anything).

The person Katz beat in the primary launched a write in campaign and the the state party chair won’t take sides. As they have since 2010, the DE GOP is still run by people who care more about embracing hate and grift than they do letting people stop being embarrassed to support them.

At a candidate forum the house nominee insisted on misgendering Sarah McBride. He was kicked out, and Katz, senate candidate, said the GOP should not allow rude bigots on their ballot and that the house guy should withdraw. This created a firestorm of hate aimed at Katz from local GOP.

Biggest thing that makes DE safely blue is the local GOP is bugfuck crazy. This year they nominated a normal, respectable person for Senate, the kind of person who would have gone a long way towards rehabilitating their image in a normal year. For the house they nominated a generic MAGA.

We tested the kitchen recently because we’re about to remodel it. Surprisingly there’s no lead in the ceiling. If we were redoing the windows, however, I’m sure we’d have to take measures to or maybe not, they’ve been replaced in modern times, too!

If it’s not peeling and you’re not drilling into it, lead paint is not something you need to worry about. We tested when buying our house to know if we needed to care (my wife was pregnant when we moved in) and found some. But since it’s not damaged we haven’t had to do anything.

It’s one thing if after three years of selling insurance someone previously in public life gets a job close to what he did prior people question if it’s too soon. But when less than a week after allegations someone asks how much is too much that persons idea of appropriate is way too small.

(Not all the paint of course, there’s only so many miracles one can ask for).

We have modern wiring, hvac, three full bathrooms, and a laundry room on the second floor. Whenever my wife points out a minor carpentry fail, I remind her we have central air in a house that was built with a coal chute. Apparently some of these white paint in this house is even lead free!

At some point in the last 30 years someone took my century home row home and comprehensively exorcised the first hundred years of dubious choices. So despite the fact that there have been so many shifts over the years that at least 20% of this building used to be the building next door…

It’s certainly counterintuitive. Some of these stories about data center satellites and reactors on the moon drive me nuts because it sounds so plausible. But the people selling these things definitely know how much more complicated things are in reality.

The near vacuum of space means there’s very little transfer of heat except direct contact. No atmosphere means no moderation of radiant energy from the sun. Surface temperature on the moon soars to over 100 C in direct sunlight then plummets to -130 C at night.

Assuming you don’t want people to write you off as an AI fanboy not worth listening too, consider not implying someone is doing it wrong when they encounter a problem that is super common with many model versions as recently as last Spring.

Last December whatever version of ChatGPT we were using, or else CoPilots integration with it, failed miserably. It would literally show me something that looked ok in the browser and create something quite different and wrong in the downloadable file.

Saying someone is using an AI tool wrong is unfair. The whole point of these things is they handle ambiguous input well. A decent GenAI tool shouldn’t fail at a task like ‘put that spreadsheet in a PowerPoint slide.’ Today I can ask copilot running Claude or ChatGPT 5.6 to do that without issue.

I’m going to suggest to my partners in the bank I work on to start stamping ‘Credit Card Inside! Congratulations on your new 30k limit!’ on the envelopes for new cards. Receiving something valuable in the mail should be exciting.

The original thread that drove this is specifically about agents and how most people don’t have a use case for them. To make use of agents it’s not enough to have a to do list, you need one that contains tasks that can be handed off to and benefit from Gen AI tools.

I should there’s another group, which probably makes up a significant portion of the people in that article, of people who lack in solidarity with the aforementioned groups as a relatively free way of helping those people be more comfortable.

Everyone I know who masks regularly is either immunocompromised, lives with someone immunocompromised and is concerned of transmission, or fell in love with the notion of getting dramatically fewer colds and other infections.

I literally just saved this picture so I could ask my personal trainer what bizarre combination of exercise and steroids could make someone look like this. Didn’t even occur to me that answer was ‘none’, but that makes sense.

When people make sexual comments about someone at work/school/whatever: ‘Dude, she deserves to do her business without being gawked at or hit on. Save that shit for tinder or bars’.

Also, when I hear someone complain how hard it is to avoid offending people: ‘just don’t mock people for who/what they are and don’t treat women as objects of desire; that’s 90% of the way there’. When they complain about words you can say anymore:’respect people’s wishes, that’s all you need to do’

One thing I’ve found helpful is to own your feelings. Not ‘some people may be offended’ but ‘I don’t like that kind of joke’. It’s wasn’t ignore some hypothetical woke-scold. Much more effective to remind people they are offending the person in front of them.

This is more of the critique I'd like to see around sex in TESCREAL spaces tbh. It's not perfect but it really does hit at the core of the issue, which is "this space is for cis men and those who are not "one of the boys" regardless of gender are expected to be available at all times"

I hope I never meet this person in real life because if I heard him speak for more than 30 seconds I would be overcome with the urge to punch him in the nose and he probably has enough power and influence to have me disappeared.

They may have used AI to edit that picture but the article itself includes a screenshot of a text with a menu and a food stand and a video at the end. If it’s an AI hoax they put a LOT of effort into it.

I’m bring a 20 oz bottle of Coke Zero to all interviews in order to avoid being stuck in a position working for someone who finds that objectionable. Because you can be certain a bottle of Coke Zero will be present during most of our future interactions If that’s a problem let’s find out now.

Personally I don’t like the idea, whether I’m doing the hiring or applying, of viewing the relationship as so one sided. As a manager I’m in different meetings than people on my team, and I use the context to figure out who needs to do what. But I’m not a lord, my boss is not a duke.

One of the implicit assumptions people differ on is are you the applicant an equal or not. If we’re equals and mutually deciding on if this is a good match then sure, bring coffee. You would to any other meeting. But if you are begging a favor of the person in power, no beverage for you.

Beyond the obvious bad faith whining of the bed bug, isn’t the audience for contemporary literary fiction tiny, in the neighborhood of 20-40K people? We’d expect idiosyncrasies and outsized trends when talking about awards picked by a few dozen people who all know each other.
