After exactly zero people asked, I wrote something a bit more personal about my journey at Netlify and how I think about my work. eduardoboucas.com/posts/2026-0...

Wife: "Did you take out the trash?" Me: "You pointed out a real wrinkle in my planning, and it's the sort of load-bearing asymmetry that can lead to a wedged marriage. Let me ground my answer on facts rather than hand-waving…" Wife: 🤬

They’re blinking at different rates, varying logarithmically with the request volume over a fixed time window. It’s more noticeable at certain times of the day (and can always use some tuning).

If *you* have T1 diabetes, you can help by cutting yourself some slack. You’re making your best moves in a game that is impossible to win.

- Do a quick research on the condition: how it differs from T2 diabetes, what you can do help them if they are struggling, etc. - Ask them how you can best support them - Cut them some slack, because they may be having an awful day even though they’re doing everything right

If you’re stressed, or your body is fighting an infection, or if mercury is retrograde, you have to do it blindfolded while riding a monocycle. You can’t drop the balls. If you have a friend or a coworker who has T1 diabetes, you can help by:

Living with this condition is like having to juggle 3 balls, 24/7. You can still do (almost) everything a functional and productive adult can do, as long as you can do it with one hand. You can’t drop the balls. And that’s on a good day.

I don’t usually talk about living with T1 diabetes, because I never thought that could help anyone, but chatting with @scott.hanselman.com made me change my mind. He helps a lot of people (myself included) by sharing his struggles, so if there’s someone I could help in some way, it’s worth a try.

3️⃣ This is a small one, but people (and especially agents) like to define a `path` property in functions that matches the default /.netlify/functions/<name> URL. This was not allowed, but is now. 🔗 docs.netlify.com/build/functi...

If you use Scheduled Functions on @netlify.com, this one is for you. You can now manually trigger your functions from the logs page. Since scheduled functions only run automatically on production deploys, testing with deploy previews was a bit awkward. No more! 🔗 docs.netlify.com/build/functi...

At @netlify.com, we use Netlify to build Netlify. This is a small anecdote of a customer who sent us a feature request regarding our Blobs product: they wanted to delete entries and entire stores from the UI. We used Netlify Agent Runners to build this and shipped it to production in record time.

Coming up with magic directives in a vacuum that make the language unlearnable is not the way.

Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 23/10/2025
As a community, we need to decide whether we still care about the language as the fabric that binds us together. As companies, we have the responsibility to balance our business goals with the interests of the community we’re part of (and from which we profit).

She'd been bedridden for years now, and every time I went to see her I thought I was going to bring her some joy. Except it was always the other way around — despite her poor health, she was the one lifting others up, with a positivity I'll forever admire. She passed away today and I'll miss her.

She remarried my grandpa, also a widower with three kids, and they had two kids together. "I had 5 kids, my husband had 5 kids, none of them died but there's only 8 of them". She loved saying this and seeing people getting really confused. One of the many riddles and jokes in her vast repertoire.

This is a post about my grandma. She was born in 1928 and she had an incredible life. In her early twenties, with three small children, she lost her husband. I can't begin to imagine how scary it must've been to be a single mother of three in 1950s Portugal, but she pulled through.

Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
Yeah, that would happen. Why do you use the `--offline` flag, if I may ask? Is it literally when you're working without an internet connection, or is there another use case?
100
Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
My pleasure. I selfishly focused my replies on the paper cuts because I can use your feedback to improve the experience, but the write up is great and a really clever use of the Netlify primitives!
000
Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
That's fair! Would you find it useful if the CLI cached the last configuration it retrieved from the UI and used that when you run it with the `--offline` flag, as opposed to silently using only the local configuration?
100
Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
I suspect that setting those is what causes the `ntl dev` flow to not work properly. We should be able to detect all those settings automatically and route the calls to the local server. It's strange that it didn't work for you.
100
Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
The default functions directory is `netlify/functions` (not `.netlify`!). If you use that, you don't need to configure anything in netlify.toml. I hope this helps. I'm happy to answer any questions you may have and thanks again for sharing this!
110
Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
As for the need to set configuration when using --offline, we merge your local configuration (from netlify.toml) with any settings you've set in the UI. When using --offline, the CLI can't talk to our servers to get any settings you've specified in the UI; so only the local settings are used.
110
Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
And in fact that's the same behaviour observed when using the local server module exposed by the `@netlify/blobs` module. The CLI is a convenience layer on top of that, so that you don't have to work with that server module directly. You also shouldn't need to set `siteID`, `edgeURL` or `token`.

Eduardo Bouças @eduardoboucas.com · 04/09/2025
Hi, Netlify engineer here. This is awesome! Thanks for sharing. I'm curious about your local dev setup and why the CLI's `dev` command hasn't worked for you. When used locally, your data isn't actually persisted to a live Blobs store, but it is saved locally on your machine, so we don't mock it.

Idea: an em dash certification programme. If the system can find content using em dashes that has been verifiably authored by you before the proliferation of LLMs, you get verified as an OG em dash user.
