Cloudscape for August 28. The sky is always bigger than me, more interesting and better looking. It reminds me to see the now.
The morning scene is viewed from S Portland and the bottom quarter shows dark silhouettes of trees, land and river running the width of the picture. Left of center, and above the silhouettes, sunlight is streaming orange shades that grade to a lighter yellow as the light moves away from the origin. Clouds create a strong diagonal presence that emanates from the sunrise location and extends to the upper right corner in an otherwise blue sky.

Predawn view of Mount Tabor, Portland Oregon
Mount Tabor, a feature of East Portland, can be seen silhouetted against the light pollution and smog that defines the human environment. The sky above the smog darkens to reveal a sickle moon centered over Mount Tabor, and a lone star is visible on the left side, close to the top. A band of lights along SE McLoughlin Blvd separates the bottom quarter of the picture, in shadow, that is the darkest element in the picture.

This is an Astata Wasp, carrying a 2nd Instar stinkbug nymph that has been stung enough to paralyze it , making it easy to carry to her nest. Once inside her nest, she will deposit the live stinkbug and lay an egg on it. The wasp will collect several stinkbugs […] [Original post on sfba.social]
An Astata wasp is seen carrying a second instar stinkbug nymph on a rocky garden surface. The wasp has a bright orange/red abdomen and a black head and thorax. The stinkbug nymph is tan in color and is being carried upside down, and head first for better aerodynamics. The wasp and stinkbug are about the same length, but the stinkbug is at least twice as wide as the wasp.

Smoky Sun Reflection at the South end of Ross Island, as the Willamette River suffers low flow and exposes more shoals. Our AQI has been improving for unknown reasons, but I’ll take it. #portland #oregon #sunrise #wildfire #smoke
The picture shows gray-green summer foliage on both sides of the Willamette River, with smoke filtered orange sun creating a zigzag pattern in the channels of exposed sand in the center of the river, indicating the south end of Ross Island. With the exception of the reflected orange sun, the picture looks mostly grey scale.

@msbellows This was the airspace above Portland this morning. I could hear the sun coughing and hacking before I could see it… #pdx

Pre-dawn Portland Sky. Description in the Alt Text. #portland #oregon #morning #sky
Looking north from South Portland, the sky is hosting an elongated cloud getting shredded by the air flow of the Columbia River, below. The cloud provides a diagonal element in the sky, running from a thicker presence just below the center left, to a more dispersed level in the upper right as the eye travels across the picture. A thick band of clouds hugs the distant edge of the visible land, separating the earth and sky.
Closer in, the silhouettes of Western Red Cedar trees dominate the left side of the picture and a Douglas Fir Tree braces the right. Lights of the city can be seen in their positions scattered in the pre-dawn darkness, and reflected in the waters of the Willamette River.

Eruption of Mount Tabor. Sunrise through clouds gives the extinct volcano an appearance of erupting (if you squint). #portland #oregon #sunrise
Blue/Gray Clouds Limit The Light Of Sunrise Visible From Across The River (Not In Picture), And The Dawn Starts With Two Wide Salmon/Orange Bands Of Light Shining From The Top Of A Wooded, Rounded, Extinct Volcano In Portland. A Smaller, Thinner Band Of Similarly Colored Light Arcs Out Of The Right Side Of The Volcano And Disappears Into The Clouds.

Mount Tabor is the last stop for the sun as it tracks across the eastern horizon. This is shot from the west side of the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon, while the distant hills are in Washington. #portland #oregon #sunrise

Looking north towards downtown Portland, from the west side. We are, seemingly, perpetually dealing with construction as the earth moves, or increasing population puts new demands on aging infrastructure. Real life. 5:19 AM overcast and mild. #portland #oregon #urban
Tall buildings are visible under partly cloudy skies as the view follows a road toward the city center. Construction equipment and barriers are seen on the left side of the picture, as the road dips out of view and re-emerges closer to the buildings and distant downtown. There are many signs of summer coming, with green and burgundy colored trees and dry pavement prominently displayed.

Ricky, smiling. On return from an excursion, I accidentally tossed the leash on top of Ricky’s head, and we both found it funny. #dogs #dogsofmastodon #portland #oregon

Opuntia fragilis. This pad broke off of our outside plant and I brought it inside to callus for a couple days. Once it was callused, I stuck it in a pot and let it acclimate and just watered it when I saw it was pushing new growth. #portland #oregon #cactus #gardening #houseplants

Opuntia humifusa is a Prickly Pear Cactus of the US East Coast. This plant species has few spines but is covered in glochids at each areole that easily embed in skin, so it’s not a good choice for beginners. There are several pads showing new buds that will […] [Original post on sfba.social]
Opuntia humifusa. The East Coast Prickly Pear.
This Cactus Appears Spineless But It’s Loaded With Glochids, With Dozens Of Glochids At Each Areole. The Pads Range From Three To Six Inches In Diameter And Radiate Out Of The Central Pad In The Center Of The Terracotta Pot. The Cactus Is Roughly Ten Inches High Off The Soil, Eight Inches Wide And Sixteen Inches Deep. Several Of The Pads Are Showing New Growth That Could Be Either Pads Or Flowers In The Near Future. The Background Is Primarily A Native Shore Pine Tree And Various Soft Focus Plants.

The picture depicts a smoky sunrise on the north flank of Mount Hood on Sunday9/28.
In total, the picture is a series of strong horizontal elements, with the foreground showing green Cottonwood and Maple trees. Above the foreground is the reflective surface of the Willamette River, dark except where the sky is mirrored. As distance increases, the far bank of the river is a band of sand and trees, and an amusement park, not yet opened. Receding further, the picture shows undulations in the topography, where historic riverbanks, now covered in trees and structures, blend into the hills and the base of Mount Hood.

The mountain is volcanic, and fairly symmetrical, with the edges tapering gently away from the conical center. There is smoke in the air, and the mountain is slightly obscured, but the smoke also filters the sun, which appears bright orange and red, with thin bands of clouds dividing the lower half. The smoke also creates bands of clouds that are colored gray/blue, orange, closer to the ground, and white and gray furthest above.
