With the prospect of avian flu arriving in Victoria any day, it's obvious that a stop to the Quail Shooting Season (ends 30 June) Yet the government has dug its heels in again saying, in relation to the quail shooting season, that there is "absolutely no reason why that would change at all".

Rescuers returned to Lake Tooliorook last weekend, where there had previously been thousands of native birds, incl 3 threatened duck species. This should have been enough to get the lake closed to shooting. Now theres just a handful of these ducks left. Not good enough @victorianlabor.bsky.social

Stubble quail are monogamous during the breeding season. Both parents raise their babies. Chicks are hatched in nests in grassland. Stomping (often with dogs) through stubble fields or native habitat to $ho0t and ki1l quails destroys nests and destroys quail families 💔😢 @victorianlabor.bsky.social

Stubble quails can fly about 500 mtrs at a time, max. They're ground dwelling birds who don't generally fly unless startled, and trying to get away. Quail sho0ting relies on disturbing quails from their normal living circumstances with "gundogs" or by flushing them up. @victorianlabor.bsky.social
