I will not be renewing my membership with @NCTE.

This is the program from the first time I attended the Conference on College Composition and Communication. I then saw the CCCC as my disciplinary home, and felt that I'd just walked through the doors to meet people and find my way around. I did not dream of the day those doors would be locked.

1992 CCCC conference program. Worn, but still intact.

And I will not be renewing my NCTE membership.

Just to add: 4Cs was super welcoming of me as an education scholar who studies developmental English, INRW, and 2-year faculty. I’ve published in its journal and other NCTE journals. There’s tremendous work and advocacy going on with these colleagues. This is a massive loss for postsecondary ed.

I’m especially sad for my Two-Year College English Association folks who are losing their hard fought-for, critical space. I hope I might see some of y’all try out The Council for the Study of Community Colleges as one place that centers CC research.

It is insane that @NCTE completely ambushed one of its professional councils and voted to dismiss it in less than 48 hours—all without input from the field or without clear explanations why. Just absorbing it into a college section of an already massive general conference is not the same.

Seeing the news that NCTE is dissolving 4Cs, absorbing its membership, and possibly ending its journal is hard to stomach right now. Especially when all of this comes out with zero transparency.

The CCCCs organization is the center of our discipline. Absolutely horrible decision by NCTE with no consideration or care for the community or anyone who has put their work into the organization, an org that is needed more than ever.

Kevin Bazner and I contributed a piece to the latest issue of the American Historical Review on using digital archives to study the histories of HSIs. At a time when MSIs are losing hundreds of millions of $ in federal funds, looking to the past reminds me that history is never a straight line.

Adventures of living with my parents: they’re watching Highest 2 Lowest in the other room, and I hear my mom go, “that’s A-S-A-P Rocky. Do you know who he is? He’s a big rapper.” M’am, did you just spell out A$AP? 🤣

I’m now at my third university as a professional, and I say with my whole chest: it is a truth universally acknowledged that doctoral students will wait until the absolute last minute to register for classes. 😆

Dropping tomorrow! Community colleges do the heavy lifting in providing access to postsecondary education for many minoritized and historically excluded groups. Yet these institutions are often left out of conversations of how national and state efforts to eliminate DEI programs and services.

This conversation left me thinking of the community college students I taught who were dealing with profound challenges while pursuing their associate’s degrees. I loved hearing Mandy and Tony talk about this topic and thinking how I can better support my students. 🧡
