It certainly is a sharp contrast! But that is a hot band behind Varner. Thanks for the tip.

I have lots of Murray albums (he seemed to release one a week with DIW in the nineties) but there are only a few I still listen to. This is one of them. Maybe his best quartet date?

Mingus sounds so good on this. What a band. Of course, Vol. 1 is even better, with Clifford Brown sharing the front line. Love these posts.

Can't believe this is almost twenty years old. Sounds as fresh as paint. My favourite Douglas.

I would not have picked this as in your wheelhouse, David. I like Wynton playing standards and this is a very nice album. I also have a soft spot for the volume he made with his father. Very MOR, but nice playing all the same. Love your updates.

Netflix. Not bad, although it has none of the magic of the novel. But even the Visconti movie missed that.

Such a wonderful book. Obviously it is inferior, but did you like the mini-series?

I'd say "Something for nothing" culture is getting paid £100,000 a year of public money, plus expenses, for a job that you then fail to turn up to for months on end

It is a very funny piece. Some great Amis prose and he gets a lot out of the concept. Only he could have written it.

There are good things in the book, but it is certainly far from his best. Some of the Clint Smoker stuff was funny, though strained.

This is still my favourite discovery on Bluesky. So great that you posted this. It has added something to the wonderful music for me.

This is so well put. I think about Keith Thomas, who has buried himself in Early Modern England for 70 years. He says he reads 'until he can hear the people talking'.

Love Frazier's anecdote. No mention of Singer's first collection, 'Mr Personality', which has some of his best pieces and a very funny introduction.

Sorry for your loss. That profile stood out in the anthology 'Life Stories', where there was lots of competition.

This is sad news. Great profile of Ricky and Singer's first collection, 'Mr Personality', is a great example of New Yorker writing from a great period.

Good piece, Dan, but what about the Bunker intervening to take a try from the Eels at the end of the first half? What happened to playing advantage?

Old enough to remember Timms plying his trade next to the SMH radar trap on a Friday. Glad to see him thriving in Queens.

Waugh (like Kipling) really is a great writer. I hope you enjoy the books.

Thanks, Mark. I thought of you the moment I heard of Sonny's passing. This is a perfect tribute.

Murray underrated here. Crichton's handling was very poor.

The tempos, the control, the chords, the wonderful dark voice: no-one ever sounded like Shirley Horn. In a better world everyone would know her.

He can write. I will look for this.

My post was general. I love Pullen and Horn. I haven't seen many of the greats live, as they don't often get down here. What's your favourite Horn album?

A beautiful disc! While it is predictable, I think the first Mandel album is perfect, especially 'Isn't it a pity?', which was never done better; and the title track of 'Close enough for love', just Shirley at the keys, is sublime. She was a school of one.

I agree about the standing of this in her own discography. I think the early Verves caught her best, but there is something great on every album.

This one is a ripper. Murray was in the studio every day during this period and some of the albums are forgettable. But, while this is a blowing date, the tunes are perfect and the band divine. Great McCoy on this one.

I had read this before without realising it was by Rosa Lyster. She is such a great writer. Thanks for the reminder.

It would be handy if this update reflected the news from the club that Cheese is likely to miss the early games, but not the two months suggested in the first reports yesterday.

Don't both the NYRB and the LRB do this? I mean, employ academics as writers, rather than not pay for contributions.

Love Bobby. Feel he never gets the acclaim he deserves. 'Love Remains' is a burner but the Horizon band with Victor Lewis played top-flight modern jazz.

Great album. The rhythm section is peak; some of Bobo Stenson's best playing for mine.

Such an appalling presentation if this story. ABC news is awful, no better than the sewer commercial stations. An embarrassment.
