Yes please to more nature and fewer fleecy stores for the sheepwrecked uplands of Mid Wales. Meanwhile, the arrogance and entitlement displayed by Bards of the Fleece around my way is staggering. No farmers, no food they say. I say: no nature, no food, no farmers.

In 1953, my mother was a freshman at the U. of FL, Gainesville. She had a ground floor dorm room and the football team’s QB crawled in her window and raped her. The school’s response when she and our family demanded justice? No consequences for their quarterback, but expulsion for my mother.

Some clear-eyed descriptions of AI as not sentient. Some obvious statements about corporate liability. But then a monstrous opinion about climate change and using tons of fossil fuels to get to AI that will fix everything. Reckless betting with all of life. 🤮 podcasts.apple.com/at/podcast/t...

When i picked up Dawkins' The Blind Watchmaker. I was already beginning to seriously doubt the Anglican faith i'd been brought up in. By the time i finished it, I knew I'd left that faith behinds. biological diversity could be entirely explained through natural processes; there was no need - and no evidence of - a divine creator. I became a humanist although I didn't know the word for it back then.

'Clutching crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.' Carl Sagan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark
Not explaining science seems to me perverse. When you're in love, you want to tell the world. This book is a personal statement, reflecting my lifelong love affair with science. But there's another reason: science is more than a body of knowledge; it is a way of thinking. I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time—when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the key manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness.

The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of content in our enormously influential media, the 30-second sound bites (now down to 10 seconds or less**)**, lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations of pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance."
