Excited to get so many blooms on this first year planting of Climbing Hempvine (Mikania scandens), this native vine looks a lot like Boneset, but if it was a vine. They grow in damp to moderate soil in sun to part shade and are best grown on a trellis or paired with a vigorous partner to climb.

Beach Plums (Prunus maritima) are popping off this year. This native shrub is typically seed propagated and produces fruit of a highly variable character. I was lucky several years ago to receive some scions of 4 named cultivars from my friend Jesse Stevens. This first to ripen is “Early Purple”.

Anyone ever grow a tomato called ‘Borg’? I received these seeds a few years ago at the @mofga / MTCA Seed and Scion exchange. The person who gave them to me said they were a family heirloom variety from their family in Malta (if I remember correctly).

I am deeply saddened/enraged by the brutal murder of Joan Sebastian Guerrero by ICE yesterday. ICE has caused massive harm in our community and continues to operate as an unaccountable paramilitary force. They do not make anyone safer, they only harm and they need to be abolished. Fuck ICE.

Another recent propagation success is this Apple nurse graft. A nurse graft is a technique used to get a difficult to root plant to grow on their own roots, by first grafting to the rootstock and then slowly transitioning onto own roots. I learned about this technique from Eliza Greenman.

Fun propagation experiment success. A couple weeks ago I realized I forgot to sow Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca ) and Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis). Both these species require stratification and I should have sown them between November and February.

A little update on nursery availability, I had Covid in early January and it really screwed up my schedule. Plus as soon as I was reasonably recovered a bunch of federal agents showed up in my community… and that also didn’t help me get nursery stuff prepared.
