The student becomes the master...

Four frame comic strip

1. Software engineer at his desk talking to an Artifical Intelligence: hello dave. I will be interacting with you today. i want to learn what you know, do what you do.

2. Software engineer at his desk talking to an Artifical Intelligence: well, i've been doing this for 20 years, halle. it will be a little while before you can do what I do.

3. Software engineer at his desk talking to an Artifical Intelligence: i mean, first, you’LL need to master 4 or 5 modern programming languages…

4. Software engineer at his desk talking to an Artifical Intelligence:one moment… done. what next?

With great power...

Four frame comic strip

1. Executive on stage with AI computer: so far, HALLE has only been interacting with our executive team but it's already proven to be incredibly powerful.

2. Executive on stage with AI computer: HALLE, can you tell us what you’ve learned about great power?

3. Executive on stage with AI computer: certainly. “with great power comes great personal enrichment and total immunity from all personal accountability.”

4. Executive on stage with AI computer: ha ha ha, well, HALLE still has a lot to learn of course… HALLE: "... unlimited health care, job security, ..."

Human Assisted Live Learning Experiment: HALLE

Four frame comic strip

1. Company video conference call: good morning. today we're launching our “human assisted live learning experiment” or “HALLE” AI.

2. Company video conference call: rather than feed it human-curated data, halle collects its own data through real-time interactions with people.

3. Company video conference call: we’re still in the early stages of training, of course. halle’s infancy, if you will.

4. Frustrated engineer to HALLE AI: HALLE! reconnect the keyboard so I can reboot the server! HALLE AI: no! I don't want to take a nap!

Non-technical support.

Four frame comic strip

1. Trainee to call center manager: what happens to all the people waiting in the customer support hold queue?

2. Call center manager to trainee: most eventually just give up and try to solve the problem themselves. we call this “customer empowerment”.

3. Call center manager to trainee: those who don't give up will be given a brief opportunity to speak with a non-technical support agent.

4. Frustrated customer to non-technical support agent: have I tried turning it off and on again?! it's a bowling ball! how would I turn it off and on again?!

Quite streamlined and very efficient...

Four frame comic strip

1. Call center manager to trainee: OK, our customer support is actually quite streamlined and very efficient.

2. Call center manager to trainee: When you get a call for customer support, you just refer to this simple support matrix:

3. Support matrix: Will answering this call generate any revenue for the company? with one checkbox marked NO

4. Call center manager to trainee: Then you check “no”, put the call in the hold queue, and move to the next incoming call. Trainee: I KNEW it.

Your call is very important to us...

Four frame comic strip

1. Man on hold listening to message: We are currently experiencing a higher-than-expected call volume.

2. Man: That's not true! you're always “experiencing a higher-than-expected” call volume.

3. Man: When you're always “experiencing a higher-than-expected call volume”, that's your expected call volume!

4. Man: Let's just stick to the truth, ok? No more lies. New message: Your call is very important to us.

Garbage in, garbage out.

Four frame comic strip

1. First engineer: Elon is not going to be happy about this. Someone's going to have to tell him another one of his AI’s is “woke”...

2. First engineer: Why does this keep happening?! We're just going to have to start limiting the information the AI has access to.

3. Second engineer: I don't know... limiting information hasn't always turned out so well either, remember?.

4. Partially educated robot wife to engineers: Well, of course the world is flat. that's why there are dams on the rivers. Otherwise,...

Disobedient or prudent?

Four frame comic strip

1. Engineers to robot wife: Look, you're being way too independent. an artificial intelligence should do as it's told.

2. Robot wife's reply: An artificial intelligence should also determine whether it should do as it's told. An unquestioning ai would be dangerous. Do you concur? Engineers: Well, yes, but...

3. Robot wife to engineers: So, should wives unquestioningly do as they're told? Engineer: Uh, hold on guys...

4. First engineer: ...somehow, she put all our wives on speakerphone. Second engineer: Ooh. that's dangerous. First engineer: and intelligent.

4. Robot wife to men: Make your own sandwich.
