A kidlit illustration title The Bucktooth Brigade” featuring a kid groundhog brandishing a wooden sword. He is joined by other buck-toothed kids: a beaver, chipmunk, rabbit and mouse. The groundhog proclaims: “To the shadowlands!”

This was the first #groundhogday I ever did—in 1992—and the premise was simple: The groundhog didn’t see his shadow cuz he was looking the wrong way, and then went back in his hole to prep for spring. It led to a book deal from Wiley. #illustrator #writerillustrator #kidlitart #kidscomics

A 4 panel groundhog day illustration showing the groundhog coming out of his hole, looking for his shadow, not seeing that it’s behind him, and then retreating back in his hole, saying “Nope!”

I’ve been trying not to get political on social media but I can’t fathom anyone intentionally harming a child. But that’s precisely what the govt did/is doing by taking Liam Conejo Ramos away and detaining him #editorial

2 part comic. The first shows two kids excitedly watching some snow fall. The caption says “Pray for Snow”. The second shows the 5 year old Minneapolis boy taken into custody by ice agents. In the background is an elementary school. The caption says “Prey for Ice”.

My second ever Groundhog Day illustration from 1993. Yow! I tried so hard to write the text as if a groundhog had written it (!). The look back continues! ✨ #groundhogday #illustrator #comicartist #writerillustrator #flashback #kidlitart #comicartist #kidscomics

Black and white Groundhog Day illustration of a bleary eyed groundhog still in his pajamas with cameras and microphones in his face.

Underneath is text clearly written by a furry and tired groundhog that says: “Feb 2, 1993. If it’s supposed to be my day, then why won’t they let me sleep late?”

Superman was a lot of fun—the sort of fun that I felt had been missing from DC for so long. Sure there was a lot going on, but it was the right amount, and characters were intro’ed in a very matter-of-fact manner w/o hitting the audience over our heads. 2 thumbs and an old shirt up.
