Does money buy success in MLB? 2026 statistics suggest that payroll explains only 3% of the variance in teams' winning percentage.
Scatterplot of MLB teams' player payroll vs winning percentage for 2026 shows only very weak correlation (r^2 = 0.03)

Sad to hear of the passing of Peter Neumann, a respected and beloved mentor to me and many other infosec researchers. Among other things, Peter helped open my eyes early to the role of tech in public policy. We need more like him. The Times has a good obit: www.nytimes.com/2026/05/17/o...

Love them or hate them, the Dodgers do more than just spend. The big Game 7 HRs came from Muncy (originally signed for minimum salary after A's released him), Rojas (signed as minor league free agent, traded away, re-acquired in trade for a journeyman), and Smith (drafted by Dodgers, 32nd overall).

Just as I predicted, the key to the Dodgers’ success is their lights-out bullpen, anchored by key midseason acquisition Will Klein.

This new report, based on work by an international group of experts, looks like a milestone in the discussion about AI capabilities and risks. I was honored to play a small role in its preparation as a "senior advisor".

Last month I was shopping for a fire blanket to hang over the pellet stove for safety, and the 5-star blanket had thousands of reviews about how easy it was to install, how good it looked, and how safe it made them feel. The 1-star reviews all said "the fire blanket caught on fire"
