Fox News Channel at 30: The legacy of a channel built on racism, grievance and division
I have spent many years writing and talking on how the Fox News Channel built its success on racism. But that’s only part of the negative influence it’s had on media and modern life.

As the hometown newspaper cut staff and TV stations left one small Virginia town, a website appeared touting a new, trusted source of local news. But the who, what, when, where and why of it have baffled residents.

There’s a big difference between “gone” and “gradually scrubbed.” There will always be a fight in creative industries between un creative shortcuts and genuine artistic process.

Eric Deggans @edeggans.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
That is absolutely not true. I see it in major artistic works every day. Watch Sinners, Lanterns, Furious, or Margo’s Got Money Troubles and tell me there isn’t major human creativity in big TV and film projects.

Refusing to believe something that is plainly true doesn't invalidate its truth, either. I mean, I'm only somebody who has worked in journalism for more than 35 years, talking to journalists in newsrooms that are using AI to varying degrees and networking with other academics studying the issue.

Those are two different tasks. Likely using different systems. With different levels of control over the data. They’re not really comparable.

People are using LLMs in many ways. Some scrape online sources for information to monitor emerging issues. Some quickly create visualizations for data. Some write code to create specialized apps - so they are notified, for instance, about stories published online on their beat.

That's exactly the point. How do news organizations know how many times Donald Trump's name appears in 3 million pages of documents from the investigations into Jeffrey Epstein? AI can do the count relatively quickly.

Eric Deggans @edeggans.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
What AI is good for in journalism is processing vast amounts of data. It's good at helping you understand the contours of a complicated story to suggest where you might concentrate reporting and analysis. It can help you see patterns in data or make sure you understand its meaning.
