I've been feeling a need to be cautious about AI, but this is a bit terrifying.

The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger.

ICE Killings: A Pattern of Fatal Encounters

Joan Sebastian Guerrero (26, Colombian, legally authorized to work in the US) was shot and killed by an ICE agent in Biddeford, Maine, while driving to work. DHS later confirmed he was not the person ICE had an order to detain. DHS claimed the officer fired while "fearing for public safety" — notably, not "fearing for his life," a distinction immigration advocates flagged. Witnesses described Guerrero bleeding from the head, saying "I tried to stop." Sen. Susan Collins called for an investigation; Sen. Angus King said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him Guerrero tried to use his vehicle as a weapon. Protests erupted outside Collins's Biddeford office.

Lorenzo Salgado Araujo (Mexican national, 35-year US resident, close to legal status) was shot and killed by ICE in Houston the prior week. He was also not the intended target — agents thought he "resembled" the target. His family's lawyer disputed ICE's claim that he rammed officers. The Guardian noted he was the 10th person killed by ICE or Border Patrol this year, with 21 additional deaths in ICE detention.

Minnesota evidence: The Trump administration finally turned over body camera footage, statements, and the damaged SUV from the January killings of Renée Good and Alex Pretti to state investigators after months of FBI stonewalling.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum announced she would file criminal complaints over the killing of Mexican migrants by ICE. Multiple protest groups across the country held vigils for Salgado Araujo.
