Sad. With all of that talent, they could have made a truly eye opening movie about climate change. Instead, they made a satire, with Tom Cruise, who flies his helicopter to Pinewood studios. Where this was made. Not sure Tom gives a shit about a warming planet. www.theguardian.com/film/2026/oc...

Digger may lose $150m after Tom Cruise film bombs at the box office
Alejandro G Iñárritu’s critically panned satire took just $20m globally in its opening weekend, against a reported $150m production budget and $100m marketing spend

Another Hollywood movie that I will be skipping. If climate change is an important issue to Cruise, he can bloody well come out and say so. The fact that he flies around in a helicopter says it all. I'll spend my money elsewhere. grist.org/culture/digg...

‘Digger’ is the year’s big climate movie. This climate reporter hated it.
Tom Cruise’s latest film is a crude parable about an unrepentant oil executive.

Pretty sure the tax rates were much higher from the 1940s to the 1970s. You're still here Peter. Britain can't afford to continue it's march towards insane inequality. It will tear the country apart. As it did in Athens and Rome. Read: The Spirit Level and Goliath's Curse for more info.

Exit tax the shit out of them. And then if they still want to leave, let them leave. Personally, I think Britain would be a nicer place to live if there weren't so many dickheads driving around in Bentleys and Range Rovers. Inequality amongst humans crushes cultures/states. It always has.

Personally, I wish meat was 2x-3x the price. But not because of wars. Rather, because farmers were paid properly, to farm in a regenerative, organic way. Think Wendell Berry, Joel Salatin. We used to spend way more on food. The French still do. Now cheap food rules.

Sadly, I don't think much will change. Trump is a symptom. Not the cause. As long as we have a state and capitalism, the game is rigged. The people at the top stay there and we're given an illusion of democratic choice. Sheldon Wolin spelled this out in Democracy Inc. Wish it weren't so. 🥲

Absolutely! Banning these ads is a no brainer. People know where to find fast fashion, cheap flights, junk food, gambling sites, etc. Humans don't need reminders to be unhealthy and polluting. We're pretty good at both.

They are some clever folks. I remember in college, they used to send very attractive girls into the bars and give out Zippo lighters with Marlboro written on them. All we had to do was scan our drivers licence into their machine. Seemed totally acceptable to me at the time.

Remember, he's playing 4D chess. The rest of us only play 1D chess. When he says outrageous things like this, it is only to distract his opponents (the Globalists/Deep State). He then pounces on them, destroys their network and boom... the cost of groceries comes down. It's actually genius.

Notice how you're doing what you accuse others of? You're using top down, authoritative rhetoric. You're telling me how it is, without discussion. And yes, that's the problem with some humans. Like you. Not all of us are like that. Some are happy to collab. No time for your silly antics. Mute!

Have you read The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber? Not sure it's true that "human society can't exist without this hierarchy". But, I will concede that some humans do tend to grab power when it is available. Doesn't have to be this way. See: the CNT, Zapatistas and anarchists in Exarchia.

What's the quickest way to lower the cost of groceries? Name a bunch of shit "... America". It's true. I read it in my economics textbook in college.

Switzerland's great migration away from US Tech begins. 🎉🇨🇭 The Swiss Federal Government has launched a pilot program to replace MS365 on 3,000 workstations with openDesk, a German open-source alternative. Find out which other European countries are becoming sovereign:  tuta.com/blog/countri...
Image with text that says, "Switzerland is saying goodbye MS 365, hello openDesk!" with a Swiss flag and below it is the Microsoft 365 logo faded out with a small cross to cancel it and an arrow pointing towards openDesk.

100% correct! 👍 Incredible how many people misunderstand the basic ideas behind socialism. Everyone here should study: the Spanish Civil War and the Paris Commune + Mondragon in Spain. That will help clarify things.

Yes, except Marx did not advocate for the state owning the means of production. He envisioned a stateless/classless society... eventually. Lenin misinterpreted Marx and begun heavy state control. When we say Marxism-Leninism, what we really mean is Lenin's misinterpretation of Marx's ideas.

I have 3 small vines in my garden. The yield is indeed tiny. Most of my grapes are small and black. To all of the people in England who think this summer was "amazing", wait until our food prices skyrocket next year. It's coming.

How about: no betting shops, no fast fashion stores, no fast food chains? This is the problem when gov. starts banning stuff. Who decides and why? I wasn't consulted on what should be banned. Were you? Another example of so-called, democracy, at work.

Very sad to hear about the passing of Wendell Berry. He has been an inspiration to me and millions of others. I'm thankful to have found his writings. I read them often. His was a voice of clear-cut, measured reason, that I will sorely miss. apnews.com/article/wend...

FT, you are doing some world class bullshitting today. "Skipton tries..." Why "tries"? And... "If they do not offer the personal touch, they will lose their purpose." Their purpose is also to be a place we can put our money and not fund large banks, who invest in stuff that is killing us. 🤷🏽

Democratic socialism is NOT the same thing as socialism. Absolute morons! Democratic socialism can exist within capitalism. It can't within socialism. Free markets can exist within both. Being critical of markets doesn't mean you don't want them. I'm critical of sugar, I still crave chocolate.

Of course Burnham has barely mentioned it. The only fix is moving away from capitalism. He knows that. Adapting is futile. How can we adapt to 2,3 or 4 degrees? We need to displace capitalism. But, as Mark Fisher once said: “It's easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism.”

Democratic socialism, although excellent, is NOT socialism. This is another attempt by the media to blur the lines. Democratic socialism can/does exist in a capitalist system. Socialism cannot. In socialism, the workers own the means of production. So NO, sadly, there is no spectre of socialism.

I think it's a play on words from Marx's Communist Manifesto: "A spectre is haunting Europe — the spectre of communism." Marx did not mean it to be scary. It's possible that the FT did.

In other news, humans donated $2tn in order to build schools, houses and teach people to be self-sufficient. Yeah right! Normalising these mega IPOs is madness. We need to ask why there's enough capital to allow Anthropic to reach such a valuation, but not enough to pay care workers properly.

I'm a socialist and I have fairly conservative views. I don't think you NEED to be woke to be a socialist. I doubt many the workers at Mondragon are woke. We need to improve our definitions. Few seem to know what socialism, communism, fascism, capitalism, etc. mean any longer.

Article is behind a paywall. But does the FT really believe that capital gains should be taxed at a lower rate than human labour? What about taxes on high frequency trading, day trading, shorting, etc? All of the above should be taxed at a lower rate than human labour? That's madness!

I for one, do not believe markets will solve everything. Although I do like markets. Markets give people what they need and want. But those things usually cause pollution and need to be regulated. That regulation can lead to abuse and unfair structural systems.

I agree 100%. I believe our focus needs to be on: 1. Rewilding the planet. Restoring soil health and biodiversity. 2. Consuming less. Live within planetary boundaries. No fancy techno-fixes required. No International treaties needed. No top down enforcement. Community driven.

That's my take on it too. I have argued until I'm blue in the face with my MAGA family. Ok, climate change is natural. Fine. Doesn't mean we're not all going to die. Even if it's natural we have to actually do something about it. "Drill baby drill" and kicking Muslims out isn't going to fix it.
