Democratic Socialists who now constitute about a third of the Minneapolis City Council. Pinning blame on them deflects attention from the role that billionaires and corporations, with their political contributions to both parties, have played in acquiring an ever larger share of income and wealth.
We also need to remember that radical equality-minded reformers in our past helped shape Minnesota's political culture and superior standard of living.
From early abolitionists to the Progressive movement to the Farmer-Labor Party's dominance in the 1930s, Minnesota's radicals usually put us on the right side of history. Today's socialist zealots fit that tradition, and many of their policy demands - such as affordable housing, Medicare for All and higher wages and benefits for workers - are reasonable and long overdue.
