Super excited to announce that I started a new job this week as a Lecturer in Geodynamics at @ucl.ac.uk! It's a dream come true to join @es-ucl.bsky.social, and I can't wait to get stuck in teaching Geodynamics along with some first year practicals.

In a new paper in @geolsoc.bsky.social, I developed the first quantitative model of spreading asymmetry of a lost ocean, constrained using geological tie points. Jonny (@uarizona.bsky.social) also did a great review of modern plume-ridge interactions. Check it our here: doi.org/10.1144/jgs2...

Map showing Farallon plate motion for symmetric (blue arrows) and asymmetric (orange arrows) spreading scenarios. The asymmetric spreading scenario better fits the available dat (yellow star and triangle).

Check out our article fresh out in @geosociety.bsky.social Special Paper 565! We reconcile geological and geophysical evidence for both flat slab Shatsky conjugate subduction & northward terrane translation in the western US at 90 Ma. Link to paper here: doi.org/10.1130/2025....

Map showing location of Shatsky Conjugate, North America and the Insular terrane from 90 to 85 Ma. Two cases for Insular's position are shown: one offshore, and one onshore but further north.

We’re here! Let me know if you’d like to meet at any time during the week.

We made it to DC! We know that not everyone has the time or the money for long distance train travel, but if you are thinking about it then we would definitely recommend! #Train2AGU

Perfect reading for a journey across America! It’s been 3 days since we left Austin (42 hours on a train) and we only have 2 hours to go to DC! #Train2AGU

Woke up to a misty morning as the train rolls through Pennsylvania alongside the Casselman River. It’s nice that the top bunks have windows too. We had a nice and refreshing sleep and are excited for some good science this afternoon @agu.org! #Train2AGU

The dining car on the Floridian is much fancier than the Texas Eagle! It’s popular too, so we shared a table with two fellow travellers and had a lovely dinner. #Train2AGU

Speeding towards DC on the final leg of our #Train2AGU journey and @alicerturner.bsky.social has already got the sewing out.

We spent the night in Chicago and then had most of the day to explore the city! We hit up Lake Michigan, the Field Museum and the canals. #Train2AGU

We had a fab day in St Louis and now we are off again on #Train2AGU. 5 hours until we’re in Chicago!

21 hours after we left Austin, we arrived in St Louis! We could be in Chicago by lunchtime and DC tomorrow, but we’re getting off to spend the day exploring! #Train2AGU

As we roll through Arkansas on our #Train2AGU, it’s time to get some sleep. Goodnight everyone and goodnight @alicerturner.bsky.social 😴

When taking the Amtrak, it is very important to have a ticket to ride…

5 hours into #Train2AGU and we’ve made it Fort Worth. Had time to stretch our legs and chat to a guy on the platform. After hearing our accents he remarked that “The UK went downhill after it closed its coal-fired power plants.” At least he’s (accidentally) doing his bit for #ClimateFriendlyTravel!

I had a great time @envleeds.bsky.social for the UK-SEDI meeting. Good to chat with the UK deep earth community about plate reconstructions!
