The amazing Karen Florini speaking @chq1874.bsky.social Hall of Philosophy today (Aug 19, 2026) showing a serendipitous symbiosis of solar panels shading sheep while they safely graze. The lecture highlighted the interconnectedness of Food and Climate. Solutions exist if we act together!
Karen Florini speaking at Chautauqua Hall of Philosophy on August 19, 2026. The title of her talk “Sheep may safely graze: ruminations on food and climate change”. She’s holding up a solar panel over a stuffed lamb, providing a visual to an observation of farmers renting land to solar energy producers, allowing sheep to graze under the shade of the same… a serendipitous symbiosis.

Call me a skeptic - but I don’t see this going well. Certainly good to try new approaches, but cyber-privateering may unleash greater threats and escalate malicious activity in an ever accelerating cycle of aggression.

If you want to know why the USAF is what it is - this book succinctly characterizes its inception. At the center of it all is HAP Arnold. Wolk did a great job in this work. #history #airpower #USAF
Cataclysm by Herman Wolk“And warfare, he was certain, would continue to undergo "radical" evolution. The cost of modern war in lives and resources made war" thinkable." The military establishment of the United States must be structured with one thought uppermost: the maintenance of peace.

As noted, Arnold always maintained a keen sensitivity to the voice of the American public. It was not just a matter of public relations on which he placed great emphasis, but Arnold had a genuine appreciation for the democratic process:

It is the American people who will decide whether this Nation will continue to hold its air supremacy. In the final analysis, our air striking force belongs to those who come from the ranks of labor, man-agement, the farms, the stores, the professions, the schools and colleges and the legislative halls.
Air Power will always be the business of every American citizen.

Coming from other military leaders, these words may have struck an oft key note, but Gen. Hap Arnold really believed them.More text from the book Cataclysm by H Wolk.
“Arnold envisioned unmanned vehicles and robots” - lots to unpack here, to include the understanding of the tight connection between and Air Force and all Sciences!

This book took a surprising turn with the detailed focus on the 1872 use of the 14th Amendment to prosecute Klan members at a federal level for traditionally local crimes if committed in an effort to suppress/deny suffrage. Frustrating that Akerman was only given a brief window to act.

Really good read about the emergence of the DoJ, AG Akerman, and the frustration over our seeming inability to hold racism (and racists) to account. Recommend complementing this book with broader histories of Reconstruction. (Foner)

Insightful #book regarding #academic and practical #security studies, for those so inclined. O’Brien addresses the complexity of war and power missed when one-dimensional analysis seems to be the only method pundits, wonks, and policy makers have in their quiver. Recommend!

Finished up this little gem #BookSky - Joan Didion’s observations of the Deep South (Mississippi and Alabama). Pithy and illuminating as a set of notes along the gulf coast, wrapping up in California. Fun, thoughtful read! #books
Book cover JOAN DIDION, SOUTH AND WESTQuote from Didions “South and West” - In the South they are convinced they have bloodied their place with history. In the West we do not believe that anything we do can bloody the land, or change it, or touch it.
How could it have come to this?
I am trying to place myself in history.
I have been looking all my life for history and have yet to find it.
